Next step in creating own matterial? - deanfourie - 07-03-2015 Hy guys, I am passionate about music and absolute love the levels of creativity on my guitar, I have a problem where and am not able to progress any further. I am not musical, of no musical background and no music theory or lessons etc. I play guitar and drums. Though I am not musically talented like many others, I feel music in ways im sure many dont (atleast thats what I think). Music is my world, and puts me in places that nothing else or no one else can (lol.) I am very creative on guitar, from picking to muting and very percussive play. I mostly jam and just go with the flow, come up with different sounds, different patterns and different tempos etc on the spot. My problem is I cannot structure the music, and I am ready to take my music to the next level with creating my own material and song writing! I can pick on a chord, but when it comes to shredding or sliding with picking and soloing etc, I get quite lost and am not sure what note to hit next and where to slide (thus again probobally the theory part) Im more into singer-songwriter stuff, John Mayer Ben Howard Ed Sheeran but hell I love different sorts from all different genres. Any suggestions/tips appreciated! It takes time but it will eventually unlock the neck for you and you will get to a point where eventually you don't even have to think about it. Someone, many moons ago, prescribed this for me when I was struggling with learning the guitar. It works. Once you have learned the scales you can abandon them and do whatever you want. In order to get to the top of the mountain you have to walk through the valley first. There's no shortcut to good musicianship. It takes work. Mr. Denyer does have this book, reviewed rapturously by all and available inexpensively: http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Handbook-Ralph-Denyer/dp/0679742751/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425917604&sr=8-1&keywords=ralph+denyer Next step in creating own matterial? - Jerome - 09-03-2015 jazzboCR Wrote:That's just it--I looked everywhere and couldn't even find a mention. You have the correct one - The Guitar Handbook is THE definitive guitar book. The Complete Guitarist was an article I read somewhere a long time ago. Automatic free pass on this one"All's well that end's well." If you're looking for very very instructional (more elitist) information on guitars, standard or extended range (7, 8, 9 string or fanned fret guitars), you could check out Sevenstring. I refer to SSO as more "elite" because a whole section of their forum is based solely on guitar problems, modifications, writing, reading, composition, and luthiery/building. I've been a member of both sites (completely free membership) for nearly 4 years and can attest that nearly everyone on the forums and sites like analogmix for online mixing are very very helpful. Peace!!! Peace!!! I'll list those links but first: Do you want to learn songs or do you want to learn the guitar? Fundamentally different questions. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ http://www.sevenstring.org/ Also look into Jamey Aebersold products. I have one of his instructing CDs that has 1 instrument on the right, a different on the left--a play-along CD: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/jamey-aebersold-jazz-sheet-music/3000081?d=sem_msn_Publishers_Jamey_Aebersold&utm_source=MSN&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=Jamey_Aebersold&utm_Jamey_Aebersold_Jazz=Publishers&mkwid=nOLTXd9F|pcrid|2410649635&kw=Jamey%20Aebersold |
