A brilliant, lyrical pianist - jazzboCR - 22-11-2014 Has a long, continuing career as pianist/music director for a superb singer, Tierney Sutton, and also a solid career leading a trio and quartet. An undeservedly under-the-radar guy. His early career was hard-pushed by Maynard Ferguson, who does not suffer mutts. Sure, the critics love him but look at what fans think on his recordings--I joined his appreciation society about 8 bars into the first song I heard: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/christian-jacob-mn0000780187/discography http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qFaMRkhl8Y << I don't use the word "ineffable" very often but I will here for this man... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTqRf4eCvRY <...Not that Mr. Jacob is some non-swinging stiff... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFo4OnrpdwM << ...But every 8 bars, every chord change is an OMG moment Bits of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" /"Tea for Two" w/ talk to the audience--a promo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y0tJ8LTbjM His own record label, doubtless named for that brilliant musicman, Alec Wilder (q.v.): http://www.wilderjazz.com/ W/ Tierney Sutton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VPHFJxsTSM << Unk. lyricist but tune by Bill Evans http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irniUXTlALo << straight rendition but so beautiful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m5CEICjNPg <<...Please don't... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkqYTgcn5JA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUOmLKE2OC0 BONUS: outdoor concert with perfect conditions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVH9216t4wU << I admit to not listening to concert perfs I put up all the way through, but I could not tear my ears, my heart away from this one. This group defines "long-standing, outstanding, cohesive music unit". |
