If you are gonna screw around on your wife, it's better to do it a continent away and and not to a woman you know to be, er, volatile. Lee Morgan forgot this precept (possibly in a heroin haze) and paid the price--she shot him at a NYC gig (they were from Philly). That said, he was 16 years of brilliance--of his 40 AMG listed albums, 27 are 4 stars or better and 3 swept the table. Picked up by Dizzy Gillespie at 18, played a long stint with that renowned talent scout and monster player/bandleader Art Blakey (who also unfortunately introduced him and others to smack), led his own group for a long time but also added that Morgan tone to tons of side projects.
