a jazz guitarist's newest - jazzboCR - 06-10-2014 One of the most technically accomplished yet imaginative jazz guitarists has a new disc out. Bill Frisell. He remains under the radar because of the wide variety of musics he has covered with no discernible defined style--he plays how the music takes him without imposing himself on it. 50 albums in 32 years, all but 7 being 4-stars or better ('92's Have a Little Faith hit the Big Megillah). As AMG says,"...blends the best elements of rock energy with jazz harmonic sophistication and melodic interpretation." Exactly. You know going in to a Frisell piece that you are going to like some or all of it--one of the best ways to lead somebody new to jazz, to real jazz using the familiar. 9 of 14 tunes on Guitar in the Space Age! are AMG picks to click. Given the nature of this disc and the age of the material, I'll link the original (OLD) with his doing (NEW), with a tasty "Making of..." vid at the end (it puts you right in the time). How about a descriptor first?: http://www.allmusic.com/album/guitar-in-the-space-age%21-mw0002709690 OLD: in same order as on disc but only those of AMG Merit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j09C8clJaXo << as played on The Lawrence Welk Show (!!!) The Ventures did a killer version too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs8F5Yp7jr8 << feel free to look up Junior Wells version... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucTg6rZJCu4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGPG_Y-_BZI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tDHSm-_BdM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8vOTKMqzw4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMcA-HGVo6o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUDdn_eJN94 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpVa_TausxI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrEPzsx1gQ << a Joe Meek production--the Phil Spector of the UK, only crazier NEW: good clips available on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/okeh-records/sets/bill-frisell-spaceage OLD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGjky5U64LM NEW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omG-hZfN6zk << Mr. Frisell admits bafflement as to why more BB material hasn't been covered by jazz artists. Me too. "Making of...": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtiT-lEkcNY << BTW, this comes out on the newly-revived Okeh label--a storied label with some of the best Black music of the 20th Century on it. Unrelated but couldn't let this "get up with it" piece featuring Duane Eddy and John Fogerty get lost: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tctwPzBNMHU a jazz guitarist's newest - SteveO - 07-10-2014 Thanks man...Bill is a long time favourite of mine! So dam versatile! I enjoyed the mini documentary ...Making of the Guitar in the Space Age. Got a thrill on listening to the instrumental guitar bands! From the Ventures...
