MH what should I buy? - Jerome - 04-10-2014 Mr Kentucky Man You are probably right that I am not a great fan of country music but I have decided that I would buy 3 CD's in this genre just to explore this a little more - what would you recommend? I have a couple of Emmylou Harris albums, but that's about it. BTW - nothing with yodelling on it please - there is only so far I am prepared to go................... Rather than a particular artist, I'd point somebody new to a genre to compendium albums--that way you get a taste of the broad scale of a genre. Both Columbia Records and RCA Nashville were major players: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Country_Classics Don't know of a set that adequately covers RCA Nashville (they were so huge, it only comes out in bits and pieces) but here's a road map: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_Records_Nashville. Remember with music for us folks down on the ground, it's always about the story. e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMSWAUAKJn0 AND http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cwcETeIUUg << A major cross-over hit for Mr. Young, written by Willie. Spinning some out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5axlwCBXC8 << duet partner with John Prine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FikZwgj89HI << informal session with EmmyLou Harris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpQNLZRcNA4 << the audience might find this humorous--I don't--straight up weeper about a stone hypocrite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rme_tFIeKM << real folks, real lives, real situations. Read comment #5 (Steve Roth). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cq9LPm7v4GA << another duet thing, this time with That Deeply Flawed Pearl, Steve Earle. Remembered if at all for 3 novelty tunes * but he had some songs about Southern life from the ground up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_I9Y76Yb20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnJL4ErQK8k&list=PL90CF9412437D02FA << one man can make a difference... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFTZ2--5xTc <<...and then there's this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZqZC24u0iY ** The hits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KecIdlEAKhU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50_iRIcxsz0 << funny thing: the battle was fought after the peace treaty was signed--slow communications was to blame and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSt0NEESrUA << lots of Southern and Western men came to this "rush". Lastly, this fun piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe0q8Lq3L2Q << the 7th Cavalry had fewer bullets than there were Native American warriors--never a good situation. BTW it was Westerners specifically the French who taught the Native Americans/First Peoples about taking whole scalps--"counting coup" had previously meant taking only a sliver. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYKWch_MNY0 << I've always felt this way... MH what should I buy? - Jerome - 05-10-2014 Thx for all the suggestions - will take me quite some time to get through all of this. A compilation of some sort would be a good idea. Steve Earle I know well. |
