Just thought I would share these awesome guys with you.. They go by the name of Radio Riddler and they're about to cheer up your day. :biggrin1:
Radio Riddler is Brian Fast Leiser and Frank Benbini from Fun Lovin' Criminals. They are lovers of Reggae/Dub music. They began their musical journey by remixing many artists in a unique Reggae/Dub style.
This is my favourite cover so far, the guys bringing their own special flavour to Prince's 'Purple Rain'.

The bigger thing is they are returning reggae/dub to it's roots: covering R&B/soul songs from a different perspective. I wish them much success and will be looking forward to next doin's, whether side-project or main vein.

The only album of UB40's I ever liked was the first one - Signing Off. It was quite experimental as well. A real milestone. Minimalistic and groovy all at the same time. The rest was complete rubbish. What I could not stomach was that 'Reeeeeed Reeeeeed WHINE' crap. They had a brilliant formula and they abandoned it in favour of public acceptance and banal covers.

"signing off" was brilliant....
i did buy a few of their follow up albums on vinyl, and probably 20 of their singles on vinyl back in the day...
very few of the singles are listenable now as i found out when i played them last year in that singles thread i posted...
like you said.....banal covers
i would not be surprised if people like Marley,Tosh etc sold a lot more records after UB40 made the genre acceptable to the general population

Like it or not, sometimes it takes an African/ other ethnic musician playing with or having their music covered by Western/European groups to raise awareness of their music. Ry Cooder in particular has done great things with Ali Farka Toure (African) and Manuel Galban (older Cuban styles). And natch, the same has happened with reggae (The Specials, UB40 and others).
