Bob Stanley has written THE best book about 60 years of pop music. Out now long enough to have used copies available, and after you get and read your copy (mine was ordered minutes ago), strongly suggest you pressure your local public library into ordering so others can enjoy and learn. Here's a review from the British paper The Guardian--the Wall Street Journal has an even better, more enthusiastic review avaiable only in print or to digital subscribers, more's the pity. Anyway: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/nov/06/story-modern-pop-bob-stanley-review My used copy was about $14 including S&H--not a cost, an investment.

Can't remember the title, but you should read George Martin's book - about the Beatles, Ultravox & music production in general. Very good read. Another good one is 'Elton'. Really well written and entertaining as well. Mike Oldfield's 'Changeling' isn't bad either although I have to say 'The Making of Tubular Bells' is not. I have read every single book about PF. Some good, some bad. Some about Marley, some about Dylan - none of which impressed me at all - all badly written.

by coincidence i saw a doco about George Martin today...it had extensive interviews with George, plus Ringo and Paul plus numerous other people he produced...

at one point the interviewer said....."you produced dozens of artists in the mid 1960s, making you the Simon Cowell of that decade, so, people could compare you to him i guess?"
George Martin's reply....."my God, i hope not!"

And for those who like to delve into the ambient/instrumental/unusual side of music, 'The Ambient Century' is a good starting point, but be warned, it's not an easy read. If you are looking for a story book about this style of music this is not it. It's more of a reference than a tale. But it is very informative when it comes to this genre. And you would be surprised as to which artists are described as 'ambient'. Starting with The Beatles no less.
