throwing gasoline on the fire--Janis Joplin - jazzboCR - 18-06-2014

Others and I have expressed the opinion that JJ wasn't "all that"--here's a list of songs some folks think she was the first or the best to do, with the original piece--I'm not taking a position on which was best--your call totally:

I've heard the argument that she exposed White folks to music they wouldn't have otherwise heard. So why didn't this drug-addled wethead ever acknowledge her sources and the debt she owed?
NB: This list was put together by a guy on another Site. Thanks, Bro El T.

Janis was/is a dynamo!!!! Her singing style was her own unique interpretation! She cites her influences as extracted from Wikipedia:

So why didn't this drug-addled wethead ever acknowledge her sources and the debt she owed?

." As a teenager, she befriended a group of outcasts, one of whom had albums by blues artists Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Lead Belly, whom Joplin later credited with influencing her decision to become a singer.[SUP] [/SUP]She began singing in the local choir and expanded her listening to blues singers such as Odetta, Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton.

I hear both of you and my challenge remains--show me any stage performance by her in which she acknowledges the sources and the debt she owed. Expressed raw emotion just isn't enough--wanna go down to a psych ward with me? I know I'm being a small-percentage-of-the-GenPop butthead, but show me I'm mistaken (I leave the word wrong for moral issues, which this isn't). As far as dying young--she sure fulfilled that part of the "dream/fantasy life".
Talk another little piece on this tart.

im not a fan of Joplin,,,i have a best of set, and theres very little on it that i like...

but when you die young, you are promoted to a "legend" status whereby, if you dont die young you can sometimes fade away...my my,hey hey

Janis don't owe nobody no debt or dues. She just do what she choose.

She was never a part of the 'let's all pat each other on the back' club. She was an enigma.

You want "enigma"? Like I say, let's stroll through any large psych ward. Or look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigma_machine
I'm gonna stay with "drug-addled wethead" and be done with it. 2 applicable theme songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TbfQPRgcS8 and

Back to Janis, I didn't think it was imperative for artists on stage to pay tribute to their influences! McCartney and Black Sabbath didn't do it recently!...lol
