90's Alternative Rock - OutofDate - 17-03-2009
I'm curious - if anyone liked 90's alternative rock, what bands did you like and why?
My favourites would be Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters and Nickelback - in my opinion the best material of the last two bands was written in the 90's.
And the others just sounded great anyway :biggrin:

Well sure, I listened to rock music in the 90's and liked a lot of it at the time, but I don't go back and listen to much of it. Maybe it is too soon, maybe it hasn't aged well. Of the bands you mentioned I liked Nirvana and Soundgarden. I've sold all the CDs I owned by them. I kinda wish I'd held onto the Nirvana albums. I probably wouldn't listen to them much, but I still have respect for the band.

one band you all are forgeting is alice in chains. i love them they have a great alternative metal sound thats excellent to listen to

I agree on the Foo fighter only good in the 90s they have definitely gone the cheese route...Also Smashing Pumpkins uh??

I've yet to move onto properly listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. All i've heard by them is Cherub Rock, which is good. Rest assured i will listen to them in the future, and i think that they were a major 90's band.

I've heard of The Pixies, and I know that they were around in the early 90's at least, but other than that i know very little about them. If anyone could give me some information on them i'd be grateful :biggrin:

Think I'm right in saying that Kurt Cobain acknowledged them as Nirvana's greatest influence. The only one of their studio albums that doesn't stand up too well is Trompe le Monde.
Other than that, I'd say buy with confidence.

Coincedentally, Kurt Cobain also said that The Vaselines were a major influence on his music, and that they were the greatest pop band ever. Nirvana did covers of two of their songs, Molly's Lips and Son Of A Gun, which are on the Incesticide album. Surprisingly, The Vaselines were from Glasgow :biggrin:
