Keith Relf was born on this day in 1943 – he died on 14 May 1976, at the age of 33, as the result of an electric shock – he was playing an improperly earthed guitar in the basement of his home at the time.

He was the lead vocalist and harmonica player for The Yardbirds and a singer/songwriter who also played the bass, keyboards and lead guitar and went on to produce other bands as well as forming the ‘supergroup’, Armageddon, which released one eponymous album. He released a couple of singles as a solo act before his untimely demise - this was one of them …

Dougie Thomson was born on this day in 1951, in Glascow. He was the bass guitarist for Supertramp – left them in 1988 and didn’t take part in any reunion tours, but he contributed to all their definitive albums, including the fabulous Paris. He was responsible for suggesting that John Helliwell join the band, and if nothing else, he deserves credit for that alone. As it stands, he might be the least lauded member of the band, but he obviously made a sterling contribution. After leaving, he went into music publishing.

Thanks to copyright issues and general blah-di-blah between Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies there’s sadly little to nothing by Supertramp in their heyday available on YT.

The best I can come up with is from Brother Where You Bound, the post-Roger incarnation of the band –

The great thing about Dougie Thompson is that he would only play a handful of notes but they would be the right ones. 'Paris' is a very good example.

Hiromi Uehara was born on this day in 1979, in Hamamatsu, Japan. She is a virtuoso jazz (and any other genre you care to mention) pianist and composer who is known for her electrifying live performances, of which there have been many!

Hiromi and The Trio Project have recently released a new album – Spark. This is an interesting short interview clip about the album with Hiromi, as well as Simon Phillips and Anthony Jackson. Musically advanced beings, all three of them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t2ob2Cakn0

Love this – from 2014’s Alive – which it most certainly is!

Robin Pecknold was born on this day in 1986, in Seattle. He was the force majeure behind Fleet Foxes - chief songwriter and vocalist. He went underground for a bit, to complete some studies, but seems to be re-emerging, slowly. After FF, he released one album as White Antelope titled False Knight on the Road, one solo, Three Songs in 2011, and then diddly up to now when it seems that there is something imminently in the works.

From the final Fleet Foxes album, Helplessness Blues, an instrumental which I like because it lives up to its name – pity it ends so abruptly?! And it’s not the upload either – strange …

... the somewhat truncated “The Cascades” -

Tracy Chapman was born on this day in 1964, in Ohio, Cleveland. Can’t believe her debut album was released 28 years ago!!

Anyway, since “Fast Car” has been appropriated by all sorts of other people … another track will have to do – from New Beginning ...

Happy Birthday to Steve Howe who was born on this day in 1947, in London. Best known for his tenure with Yes, and also with Asia, as well as GTR, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, and of course his solo output. One of my favourite guitarists – I think he’s brilliant – love his eclectic output.

He’s worked with artists as diverse as Fish, Marillion’s erstwhile voice, Billy Currie of Ultravox renown, and Queen; and then he goes and plays the beautiful aria from Heitor-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No 5! I’m totally sold.

The aforementioned aria, from his instrumental album Time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsim4exuoi4&nohtml5=False

From Billy Currie’s Transportation, which is fabulous – I’ve been listening to this album lately - (instrumental again) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoXNYvxV9xc

“Time and a Word” from Fish’s album Yin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUsFEwMPHF4

From Steve’s album Turbulence – Billy Currie returning the favour on keys and viola on this release – the title track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kme_YF5hTvs

“Catherine of Aragon” from Rick Wakeman’s The Six Wives of Henry VIII - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDuBhDzjYyI

And what is presently my alltime favourite ‘upper’, also from Time (almost certainly repeating myself - not sure which thread!) – the simply delightful “Orange” …

Steve Gadd was born on this day in 1945, in New York. He’s held in extremely high esteem for his drumming prowess and has worked with a list of artists, the length of which boggles the mind. This is a mere few of them: Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Joe Cocker, Bob James, Chick Corea, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Jim Croce, The Manhattan Transfer, Michal Urbaniak, Steps Ahead, Tony Banks, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Carly Simon, Richard Tee, Jon Bon Jovi, Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, The Bee Gees, Michael McDonald, Michel Petrucciani, Kate Bush, and David Sanborn.

A signature lick –
