Always preferred the Killer's country side thus when going for a compilation I chose this. Decent set but there are some I could replace. Four
of them as you can see. Outweighed by the 7 love tracks, with Middle Age Crazy my all time favorite Jerry Lee track. Jerry is pushing 80 now.
Saw him on something a few years back (Imus show I think). He looked terrible and his voice was terrible, but he could still pound them keys,
and he still enjoyed it. Another legend I don't expect to be around much longer. Just realized he is not a Country Music HOF member. That needs
to be remedied. Thought he would be there before the Rock side. Assuming most of these tracks were singles. The earliest cut is from 1965 with
the lead track. This is from the album where he went country. The latest hit here is Middle Age Crazy from 1977. So this is a small glimpse of
the mans career. Probably only for real country fans, like me.

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-05-2014

i used to think you were crazy liking his country material over his half dozen or so rock singles...
but now,
i think i prefer the country side of Jerry Lee also since picking up a 'two for one' country set of him a while ago...

and yes, this guy should be in the "country music hall of fame"..but i guess he stood on too many toes and burnt too many bridges over his career to get inducted.

and the comment re" probably not being around much longer...
i agree...Jerry Lee,Fats Domino,Chuck Berry,Little Richard...one of them must surely pass over before the years end???

BILLY BRAGG & WILCO "mermaid avenue" cd, 1998

career stats:
studio albums.........3
singles...................5

this album: #34 UK,#12 AU,#90 US

singles:
"way over yonder in a minor key"....#118 UK
"she came along to me".................no chart entry

ok,
the history of the album/collaboration...
in the mid 1990s Woody Guthrie's widow discovered a box of handwritten lyrics/poems he had written years previously, she offered them to Bob Dylan and have him put music to them and release them, anyway, neither Bob or Mrs.Guthrie were ever in the same place at the right time so she then offered the lyrics to fellow protest/social commentator Billy Bragg to see if he could work with them...
anyway,Bragg jumped at the chance and enlisted good friend Jeff Tweedy to help arrange these lyrics into song...
so what we have is a collaboration of fifteen tracks by Billy Bragg and Wilco.
the melodies and structure have remained in the folk realm, but they have been done in such a way as to modernise them and the result is a classy affair of Guthrie songs, from protest type songs, through to full blown love songs and it works beautifully.
the album earned both artists a Grammy for "best contemporary folk album" at the 1999 Grammy Awards.
since then they have released two more albums of previously unreleased Guthrie lyrics, i have the second one but not the third one which was released last year.
the album is only one of two Bragg albums to make the US charts(the other is the second installment of this trilogy), it is also the highest charting album by Bragg here in Australia.
personally, i think he has released better albums but this is a nod to one of the biggest influences in folk music, so i cant really knock it!
