What 's the weather like where you are ? - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-07-2016 bob_32_116 Wrote:CH must live in a colder part of Perth than I do; the "official overnight min for Perth metro area" was +0.6, and the station where those readings are taken is quite close to where I live. yes I do... the water table around my area is a lot higher than most other areas in and around Perth, thus when it gets cold it is usually a couple of degrees "C" colder here than the other locations where they record the local metro temperatures. What 's the weather like where you are ? - Whipsy48 - 15-07-2016 Montreal Canada We have hit the 30 C the past few days which is ok by me! What 's the weather like where you are ? - bob_32_116 - 15-07-2016 Whipsy48 Wrote:Montreal CanadaSeems a long time since it was 30C here - we have had the coldest July for several years. Anyone who has not already read "The Weather Makers" by Tim Flannery is urged to do so. It really explains well why a world-wide global warming trend can result in colder conditions in certain places, leading to the unfortunate phenomenon of laymen saying "Global warming is a fiction, it's cold here." What 's the weather like where you are ? - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-07-2016 ah... but NASA has reported that the ozone layer is decreasing by the size of Greenland on an annual basis (each year since 2011)... I might open up a can of worms here but I do not believe in "global warming"...and if it is warming up, it is a natural occurrence that happens like clockwork every few thousand years.... also.... it was only thirty five years ago that Pres. Reagan held an international summit with all the experts agreeing that the world was heading into a "minor ice age"....the world temps were set to drop 2-3 degrees over the the next fifty years, the polar ice sheets were heading further south than known in recorded history etc, etc.... to me, its a scam brought about by certain parts of the establishment to create fear amongst the general population to benefit certain wealthy individuals and organisations who can profit from it (that goes for global cooling also).... I don't believe it..... I mean Al Gore runs all over the world telling people that the US is cutting down its forests at an alarming rate.."where once were trees are now empty swathes of soil or hundreds of miles:.... I drove through the US (well, what was it MH, 17 States maybe???) there were forrrests everywhere, abundant wildlife, it was beautiful, and Gore (an ex-VP) criticises his own country and basically puts the US to the sword on an international stage)...I didn't believe him after I saw it , and you cant tell me it was the other, by coincidence, two thirds of the US where forests had been lost that I never saw. that's my rant for the week, over and out: What 's the weather like where you are ? - bob_32_116 - 15-07-2016 ^^ The ozone layer indeed appears to be healing, but the ozone hole is a different issue to global warming entirely. the latter is mainly due to too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Anyway, the evidence for it is there, and most scientists agree that global warming is real, and is a real threat. Not much point in urging to to read the evidence though, as it seems your mind is already made up. What 's the weather like where you are ? - Ruby - 15-07-2016 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:ah... Uh oh. You said it CH â a can of worms it is. The bait is irresistible, and itâs reeled me in, hook, line and sinker! Lol! We seem to be an opinionated bunch, and to each their own ⦠so here comes a rebuttal â¦. I get the impression that it is big industry that is bamboozling us and denying the human role in climate change, and that they have perpetrated this misinformation for some time now, whereas actually, they are the main protagonists, and not the protective organisations. However, I think we all contribute at individual level too, in our arrogance and ignorance. IMHO, we are fed what the most powerful would have us believe, and heaven forbid we should disrupt the well-oiled machine â pun intended. What do we know, after all? For example, despite all our breathtakingly brilliant technological advances and the mammoth leaps we have made in terms of the accessibility of knowledge and understanding, just a few short years ago, people were still being wantonly exposed to asbestos fibres, whilst evidence of death from the inhalation of the stuff goes back thousands of years â how crazy is that? Climate change is a subject for endless debate (we are all obsessed with the weather :redface , but I believe we shy away from accepting responsibility because we donât really know what to do and because the consequences of our actions are so unthinkable. I donât think the mega wealthy captains of the fossil fuel industries give a single hoot about the future â in fact, I donât think many of us do â itâs just too abstract a concept; that we may one day no longer to be able to live here because we have poisoned ourselves and made vast tracts of the planet uninhabitable. Look at the fallout from Fukushima which has already had, and will still have far-reaching ramifications, and which nobody talks about anymore â itâs conveniently swept under the carpet, probably because itâs just so damn scary. The way we treat our environment, generally speaking, and the shifts in the fine balances of earth cannot be separated. Sure, they may be other universal cyclical factors and patterns that play a role as well, (El Nino being one of them, for example) but in my view, and after having read quite widely on the matter, our ever acquisitive greed and blindness has caused, and will continue to escalate, a massive problem. Try telling people like Ranulph Fiennes, whoâs actually been at the Arctic coalface on numerous occasions, that thereâs no such thing as climate change. What about deforestation in places other than the USA? What about species that are crucial to all our survival and that are dying out because their precarious eco systems have been altered beyond belief? What about bees â a creature without whom we will starve, and which are dying in unprecedented numbers? What about Beijing, where people canât even breathe anymore without using a filter? Of course we must be affecting our climate patterns â we are spewing gazillions of noxious by-products into the air and water, and as the population grows, and with it the demand for more food and more disposable crap (yes, I am a guilty consumer), it will get worse. Just because we canât see it all, doesnât mean itâs not there. But itâs not all doom and gloom; on the upside, there are many positive inroads being made in terms of awareness, and thankfully, plenty of people who are passionate about looking after what we have and drawing attention to what we really need to see and to change â so maybe itâs not too late; only time will tell. Thatâs my story and Iâm sticking to it! Oh â and a link, since NASA was mentioned - http://climate.nasa.gov/causes/ And lastly, I donât know whether any of us here are scientists, nor am I of the opinion that science holds all the answers, but I am inclined to heed the mighty brain of Stephen J Hawking â¦. âAs we stand at the brink of a second nuclear age and a period of unprecedented climate change, scientists have a special responsibility, once again to inform the public and to advise leaders about the perils that humanity faces,â he said. âAs scientists we understand the dangers of nuclear weapons and their devastating effects, and we are learning how human activities and technologies are affecting climate systems in ways that may forever change life on Earth. âAs citizens of the world, we have a duty to share that knowledge. We have a duty.â What 's the weather like where you are ? - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-07-2016 can someone please show me the way to the nearest forest because with all this deforestation I appear to be a sitting duck in the open.... each to their own people, just like the "creation/evolution" debate...no one is going to change anyones opinion on that one neither, but nice reply Ruby, and hey... all was kept civil and free from hostility and for that we all need to be applauded What 's the weather like where you are ? - Ruby - 15-07-2016 ^Thank you CH. :clap22: What 's the weather like where you are ? - bob_32_116 - 15-07-2016 Thanks Ruby, you said it probably better than I could. What 's the weather like where you are ? - Ruby - 15-07-2016 ^You're welcome. Just standing up there - on my soapbox! |
