Jan Garbarek was born on this day in 1947, in Oslo, Norway. He is a tenor and soprano saxophonist and a very highly regarded one, at that. He’s released albums with Ralph Towner, Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, and numerous others, as well as 30 of his own under the ECM label for which he represents a hallmark, mostly in the genres of jazz, classical and ‘world’ music.

This is the title track from his Grammy nominated 2004 album, In Praise of Dreams, and is simply divine IMHO … his sax, and that viola – super classy stuff –

Alan Clark was born on this day in 1952, in County Durham, England. He was the keyboardist for Dire Straits, joining them for Love Over Gold and remaining with them until they disbanded. He has worked with both Knopfler brothers in their solo capacities, as well as with a host of other musicians, Bob Dylan (Infidels), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner (as her musical director), The Bee Gees, Jelly Bowl, Van Morrison, Roger Daltry, Elton John, etc., etc., ad nauseam!

This was a very appreciative audience …

His piano work on Telegraph Road is simply superb.

Randy Meisner was born on this day in 1946, in Nebraska, USA. He was a member of the Eagles and Poco – bassist and backing high harmony, or co-lead vocalist as well as songwriter. He also worked quite extensively as a session musician.

He seems to have had a lot of health issues mostly due to lifestyle choices and he can no longer sing. Sadly, just two days ago, his wife died as the result of a firearm accidentally discharging and fatally wounding her. I’m not exactly sure of the circumstances and am not inclined to dwell on them here; suffice to say, RIP Lana Rae Meisner.

He gets credit for co-writing “Take it to the Limit” with Glenn Frey and Don Henley, but he was also the sole writer and lead vocalist on this one …

Tom Scholz was born on this day in 1947, in Ohio, USA and Boston was his brainchild. He refused to release anything unless he considered that it passed his standards in terms of quality so there was sometimes a rather lengthy wait between albums, however, they have sold over 31 million records in the USA alone. Love ‘em or not – most people on the planet are guaranteed to know at least one Boston song!

Aside from the band, Scholz is a wiz at engineering and invented what was eventually called the 'Rockman' line of guitar effects equipment. He’s a philanthropist who is dedicated to a number of very worthy causes, and is a committed long-term vegetarian. He’s known in the industry as an ‘un-rock n roller’ as he is probably one of the least subscribed rock stars around. No lifestyle shenanigans for this one – he’s a righteous nerd! Good for him.

I listened to the Jan Garbarek link Ruby....anything with Saxaphone suckers me in every time, good stuff.

Back to your "local hero" link...awesome piece of music IMO, I like or love everything instrumental that Knopfler does.

^Glad you enjoyed those! Jan Garbarek is fantastic.

Astor Piazzolla was born on this day in 1921, in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He died in Buenos Aires, in 1992, aged 71. A virtuoso bandoneon player, Piazzolla is often referred to as the world’s premier composer of tango music.

Most would probably recognise his “Libertango” which is played here by Yo-Yo Ma. Ma paid him tribute on an album titled Soul of the Tango, which is where this is from … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdoHeJBbNs0

And Grace Jones took her own liberties with “Libertango” when she recorded this – from Nightclubbing … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIN3IE3DHqc

I like this – Piazzolla’s “Soledad” …

Can't really explain the Boston thing but Steely Dan is a band I 'grew' into. Nowadays when I listen to their stuff I am constantly hearing bits and pieces I never noticed before. Fascinating band. As for Boston - just love the guitar riffs - 'basic instinct' is the best way to describe it. It just works for me. Tom has a very unique sound - just like Andy Latimer from Camel. They spent years perfecting their tone and it shows. I must admit that sometimes Boston can be a bit pedestrian, but when they get it right it just blows me away - 'Don't Look Back' in particular.

Les Holroyd was born on this day in 1948, Lancashire, England. He was one of the founding members of Barclay James Harvest and remained with them up until the band parted ways in 1998. Now there are two incarnations - John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest and Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd. He plays bass guitar, acoustic guitar and keyboards, and he sings and writes. IMHO a compilation or live album is probably the best idea way to go with this lot. They get so much right, in random placements across their catalogue but I find it difficult to pick a wholely satisfying album.

Holroyd wrote and sings this, the lead track from the album Baby James Harvest –
