Randy California was born Randy Craig Wolfe on this day in 1951. He died on 02 January 1997 whilst rescuing his twelve year old son from a rip current. The boy lived, but Randy drowned.

He and his then stepfather formed the band Spirit, with Randy playing guitar, bass and doing backing vocals. Their debut album was released one month before his 17[SUP]th[/SUP] birthday and contains the track “Taurus” over which there has, and probably always be will, a huge debate about whether or not his riff was purposely ripped off for “Stairway to Heaven”. I’m not sure of the ins and outs of that one – the fray is out there if anyone cares to enter it! I think you can actually hear “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” in there too if you try hard enough, lol! Here’s “Taurus” though – for interest - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd8AVbwB_6E – and very nice it is too.

He also wrote what was to be their biggest hit which appears on their second album – “I Got a Line on You” – I prefer “Nature’s Way” –

1943: David Geffen:
...that would make him 76 years old now:

Geffen Record label boss and founder of Asylum records who signed The Eagles, Crosby Stills Nash, CSNY Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon and Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon (1980) and later Guns 'n' Roses to name a few...
His initial idea for his label was to sign artists and let them produce what music they saw fit (ala Apple Corp.)
he was highly influential in the American music scene from the early 1970s for that reason ie: giving artists a fair deal when the other labels turned them down.
Glen Frey initially saw him around 1970 ater all the major labels wouldn't sign him as a solo artist, Geffen told him to get a band and he'll sign him, that band was obviously The Eagles...
Guns 'n' Roses debut set "appetite for destruction" had been released for twelve months and it didn't sell at all, Geffen badgered the owners of MTV and said if they played 'welcome to the jungle' that GnR would be the biggest band in the world if they got a break on MTV...MTV eventually gave the video a 4am slot on the show and received upwards of a 1000 calls to play it again, the album ended up selling in excess of 30million copies worldwide after selling less than one hundred thousand in the previous year without MTV
Neil Young left 'reprise' in the early 1980s to sign with Geffen Records only to be famously sued by Geffen for 'making records that don't sound like Neil Young'???!

he ended up selling of Asylum/Geffen in the mid 1990s and co-founded the 'dreamworks' movie company with friend Steven Spielberg...

obviously, he is not a musician, just paying respects to him as a music mogul who without whom, we would probably not have heard the likes of some of the above mentioned artists.

Lester Hunt was born on this day in 1956, in Manchester, England. Primarily a guitarist, he’s also proficient on keys and vocals and is a respected songwriter. He joined the Climax Blues Band in 1985, playing on, and helping produce their album, Drastic Steps, and he has been associated with them ever since even although the line-up has been modified a bit thanks to natural attrition! They manage to put out some wonderful laid back sounds and yet at the same time, are so together – they seem to sound great live too, which is always a testing ground.

He wasn’t on this one at the time, but probably has played it since. It's one of their better known singles – “Couldn’t Get It Right” – love it … so funky – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDcbZYQTim4

He was on this though, and I can’t help hearing Bowie’s “Fame” running parallel in my mind! The riff is not exactly the same but it’s pretty damn close, IMHO - could be totally wrong – no slander intended! The recorded version sounds different, so maybe it’s just this live version?! The number in question - “Chasing Change” – nice little solo from Mr Hunt around the 4.20 mark -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8GDt-RJYZ0

... and this one is from Drastic Steps –

1942: PAUL JONES
vocals, harmonica for one of my favourite five bands of the 1960s in Manfred Mann...
also played with The Blues Band and more recently the reformed Manfred Mann without Manfred but with Mike D-Abo,
they call themselves The Manfreds...
I met Paul Jones last year when the Manfreds' toured here, he apprears to be a pretty relaxed down to earth guy...!
anyway, in the mid 1960s after he left Manfred Mann to pursue a solo career he had a couple o charting sings on the UK
charts, heres one of them nowand its a decent live performance 1999.

A year ago, I started this thread under what I now find, is the erroneous assumption that George Harrison was born on this day – or was it??! (Erroneous, that is) It’s a controversial subject. He seems to have been born at around 23h50 or something like that, and was seemingly never entirely sure himself whether he was born on the 24[SUP]th[/SUP] or 25[SUP]th[/SUP] of Feb.

So – my abject apologies for misleading info, and thanks for all the inputs and comments on what has now been a full circle, annually speaking. I’m glad the thread had/has legs!!

And I'm sure there are plenty of birthdays that have been left out …

The only one other birthday for today that I relate to – somewhat remotely – is that of Rupert Holmes (born David Goldstein), of Cheshire, England, who is famous (well – it’s all relative!) for his Piña Colada song – ‘Escape’. Holmes is a singer/songwriter, Tony Award winning musical playwright and author who is actually ever so slightly embarrassed by that boozy number, especially since he doesn’t drink alcohol at all, although I’m quite sure he’s no poorer for it Confusedmile:. And so it goes …
