Pulled this out of the box with a flashback of "I think this is a bad album". Sometimes I'm wrong. After all, it has been years. Slapped it on the turntable and after the first 2 songs I was thinking, man this ain't that bad. But it was all downhill from there. Not a thing after that worthy of mention. Once again previous impressions remain intact. This would be album #11 in the soon to be defunct Funk. The lyrics aren't too bad, dealing with the title subject matter. Vocals are traded off between Farmer and Brewer and Brewer wins that battle. The album reached #47 on the charts with singles of Take Me (#53) and Sally (#69). It is a cool cover though.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Genevieve

Best Track - Dues

I think I'm headed for a terrible accident.
Made more plans than anyone who ever paid their rent.
I'm not stupid and I might be havin' too much pride.
Surgeon general has determined that I may as well die.

Jesus are you watching or have you gone blind.
Evil souls are upon us and we're surely runnin' out of time.

CHORUS
I tried religion and some holy roller steals my tenth.
In the grave yard I ain't strong enough to jump the fence.
Some men they say they got more soul than both my shoes.
Makes me wonder can we ever stop payin' dues.

I might be workin' on a scene that I can never act.
Everybody's gonna think that my mind is cracked.
I don't care because it's my right to win or lose.
Makes me wonder can we ever stop payin' dues.

Crazy, am I crazy for wanting so much more.
My mind says I can't ever give up but I still can't be sure.

CHORUS

Can we ever stop payin' dues.
Can we ever stop payin' dues.
Can we ever stop payin' dues.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the "Summer Of Love" after 1967?
The answer is that it traveled across the North Sea and lodged in the canal culture in Amsterdam...............Having lodged there ( Usually on a boat or barge) the cultured then beamed itself back into the UK via the culture that evolved there:

Three Dutchmen and and Englishman reflecting mostly the feel of the time combine to make this flower power based album . It is strange that this essentially English psychedelic album has a mixed pedigree and a tulip based slant ..............there are flower power anthems.........simple fairy story based tracks and some good musicianship....... An interesting listen and an insight into that period to boot!.Cool

Been really digging The Beatles Past Masters Vol.2 (remastered) Those guys were just amazing and I am not even that big a Beatles fan. Seems like the older I get the more I realize how incredibly talented their collective chemistry's output was.

The rough edges are off as the Boston band tries a sophomore effort. Not that there was anything wrong with the debut. This one reached #3 on the U.S. charts, probably by the album cover alone, with the single of Let's Go making #14, and a follow up of It's All I Can Do not doing much. Only 1 throw away on here, some crap thing about Scooby-Do.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Shoo Be Doo

Best Track - It's All I Can Do

one too many times I fell over you
once in a shadow I finally grew
and once in a night I dreamed you were there
I canceled my flight from going nowhere

it's all I can do
to keep waiting for you
it's all I can do
it's all I can do
(it's all I can do)

one too many times I twisted the gate
when I was crazy I thought you were great
I kept my renditions of you on the wall
where holiday romance is nothing at all

it's all I can do
to keep waiting for you
it's all I can do
it's all I can do
(it's all I can do)

you wait in the wings like a Saturday flirt
protecting the judge, you don't want to get hurt
and once in a moment it all comes to you
as soon as you get it you want something new

it's all I can do
to keep waiting for you
it's all I can do
it's all I can do
(it's all I can do)

it's all I can do
to keep waiting for you
it's all I can do
it's all I can do
(it's all I can do)

it's all I can do
to keep waiting for you
it's all I can do
it's all I can do
(it's all I can do)

I first came across John Themis in the late 80s............The UK had just launched its 4th terrestrial TV and they had a few problems providing a full schedule.......to fill the gap in the afternoon they used a program called " The Art Of Landscape"....This was the time when the fledgling New Age movement was beginning spearheaded by Coda records. The program simply showed a selection New Age music videos and some of these were by John..........Has has a finger picking classical style and a good feel for the production of gentle relaxing guitar based music ..................John has gone on to make a few excellent solo albums but, is now largely known for his excellent production skills....."The Art Of Landscape" lives on an is now an internet based channel an still broadcasts some stunning music and videosCool

I came across this series of CDs from AIP over ten years ago......they are a collection of ( to quote the CD case) rough hewn tombstones from rock and roll's stone age" basically hidden gems from small labels that did not sell well but were classics of their kind:

volume one contains

  1. The Litter: "Action Woman" — rel. 1967
  2. The Preachers: "Who Do You Love" (Ellas McDaniel)" — rel. 1965
  3. The Floyd Dakil Combo: "Dance Franny Dance" — rel. 1964
  4. The Outcasts: "I'm in Pittsburgh (and it's Raining)" — rel. 1966
  5. The Grains of Sand: "Going Away Baby" — rel. 1966
  6. The Ju Jus: "You Treat Me Bad" — rel. 1966
  7. The Haunted: "1-2-5" — rel. 1966
  8. The Soup Greens: "Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan) — rel. 1965
  9. Positively 13 O'Clock: "Psychotic Reaction" — rel. 1966
  10. Kim Fowley: "The Trip" (Kim Fowley)" — rel. 1965
  11. The Elastik Band: "Spazz" — rel. 1967
  12. The Split Ends: "Rich with Nothin'" — rel. 1966
  13. The Shadows of Knight: "Radio Spot" — rel. 1967
  14. The Shadows of Knight: "Potato Chip" — rel. 1967
  15. The Wilde Knights: "Beaver Patrol" — rel. 1965
  16. The Sparkles: "Ain't No Friend of Mine" — rel. 1967
  17. GONN: "Blackout of Gretely" — rel. 1966
  18. The Weeds: "It's your Time" — rel. 1966
  19. Echo and the Bunnymen: "Action Woman" — rel. 1985
These tracks make excellent listening and give a good insight into some of the
other interesting releases that were happening in the sixtiesCool
