1959: Ali Campbell
lead vocals for UK reggae outfit UB40...
I used to be a big an of these guys back in the day but their music sounds flat and dated to me now...
one of the biggest groups in the UK in the 1980s and 1990s claiming around 40 top40 hits during that period...
probably most fondly remembered for their classic cover of Diamond's "red red wine" off their "labour of love" album...
im no fan of reggae on the whole but their debut album "signing off" is IMO, the best reggae album ive ever heard...
then they got popular and successful and reggae became commercialised pop reggae...
the track I pick today is off their debut album...

Happy Birthday to the genius that is John Anthony Helliwell, Supertramp’s self-appointed master of ceremonies (he was fantastic in Paris) and their multi-faceted player of wind instruments which he’s always done oh so very well – such an integral part of their sound. He’s 71 today, born in Yorkshire, UK – still playing and contributing to others albums, as well as having released his own jazz oriented John Helliwell’s Crème Anglaise - a sample https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAvIxJHySdo

This is from the decidedly jazz/rock Supertramp release Some Things Never Change (post Roger Hodgson) which showcases the Helliwell brilliance magnificently but which will probably disappoint those expecting something similar to Breakfast in America. Incidentally, Supertramp, in their most recent incarnation only stopped touring last year as Rick Davies, who is equally brilliant, is unfortunately battling a horrible cancer – may he fight well.

But getting back to that link –

1972: Billie Joe Armstrong,
American singer, songwriter, musician, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and actor with Green Day. Their 1994 album Dookie has sold over 10 million copies and they were the Top Modern Rock Act in the US in 1995. Armstrong is also a member of the punk rock band Pinhead Gunpowder and provides lead vocals for Green Day's side projects Foxboro Hot Tubs and The Network.
IMO, theyre the closest thing to the UK 1970s punk scene we have...attitude, political ideals and social conscience...
I really have to play this one, no not 'good riddance'but the one dedicated to Armstrong's deceased father...

Loreena McKennit was born on this day in 1957, in Manitoba, Canada. She has the gift of a beautiful clear soprano voice, and apart from her own songs, is an expert at fitting classic, epic poems and other prose to music of the Celtic and ‘world’ persuasion (for want of any other description).

I’m not at all a big fan of Celtic music but she has such a knack for imbuing whatever she does with something strikingly elemental, as well as with great grace and elegance; she’s in a league of her own.

Love this, with the wonderful Caroline Lavelle on the cello -

Dennis DeYoung was born on this day in 1947, in Chicago. He is one of the four founding members of Styx, and was their primary vocalist until he left the band in 1999 to pursue a successful solo career. Up until his leaving, he had shared lead vocal and writing duties with Tommy Shaw from the time that Tommy appeared on the scene, however, during their heyday, DDY was responsible for writing and singing 6 of their 7 Billboard Top 100 hits. He is accordionist and keyboard player – entirely self-taught.

I found this quite interesting – “Influenced by the recent release of Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s first album, DeYoung – a novice synthesizer player at the time – used a modular Moog to record the keyboard tracks for Styx' debut album in 1972. This album featured a rock version of "Fanfare for the Common Man", more than 5 years before ELP came up with a similar idea of recording this classical composition as a rock band featuring the synthesizer that would later become one of ELP's best known recordings.” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NBZTkPxWek.

From 1981’s Paradise Theatre – a good strong ballad, written and sung by DeYoung –
