RUSSELL MORRIS "sharkmouth" cd,2012.

career stats: 1964-present
studio albums: 11
singles: 38

this album stats: #6 AU

yet again, another xmas giftcard purchase...
this time round an album released in november 2012...
Russell Morris was a rock stalwart here in the late 1960s through to the mid 1970s,
after that time he has flitted in and out of the business, this is his first studio set in almost a decade...
all tracks penned by Morris and all tracks are a retrospective look at life in Sydney,Australia in days gone by.
songs range from stories about stories his grandmother told him "black dog blues", through songs of the 'great depression'(tracks 2,6,9,10)...
songs about infamous crime figures(tracks 5,8), songs about Australia's greatest racehorse "phar lap"(track 11), and various other ditty's from history.
one track called "ballad of les darcy" (which happens to be my favourite one here) is about boxer Les Darcy...for those of you who dont know who he is check out Russell Crowe's movie "the cinderella man".
most tracks here have a definate folk feel to them, theres a couple of outright blues tracks and a couple more that have a bluesy/folk sound happening.
now, "allmusic.com" give this album a perfect score of 5/5 , i think thats a bit overboard, but for a guy almost fifty years into a career with many ups and downs this is still a pretty good album.
shame there are only two links available.none of which are for my favourite track, so if youve got to listen to one then pick the one for track #1

MARK KNOPFLER "get lucky" cd, 2009

solo career stats:
studio albums: 7
solo singles: 14

this album stats: #9 UK, #43 AU, #16 CAN, #17 US

yet another xmas gift card purchase, this time its the 6th solo set from former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler...
this one, like the other couple of solo albums i have of his, has distinct folk, folk/blues overtones...
i love the way he writes his songs and the stories he tells in them, love his vocals and finger-picking style on guitar...
this album, however, isnt anywhere near as good as "the ragpickers dream" and not quite as good as the other one i bought with my giftcards(youll have to wait for that one!).
this one still passes for me as a good album overall, but there are three tracks i do not like for some strange reason.
i have provided links to the two tracks i love plus a couple of the ones that have real possibilities to become tracks i love over time...

Their 2nd album, #9 country, #60 overall
Singles - This Songs For You (#51 country), That's Important To Me

My kind of country here from this husband and wife team. Discovered on CMT talent show in 2008 where they finished third in the competition. Husband half of Rory Feek left Kansas for Nashville in 1995 working as a song writer for 10 years for various publishing companies before starting his own. Joey hails from Indiana and moved to music city in 1998 and recorded a solo album in 2000 which never saw release due to the demise of the label. She recorded a second album in 2004 which met the same fate. The pair hooked up somewhere and were encouraged by a mutual friend to audition for the premiere season of CMT's Can You Duet. Signed by Sugar Hill Records after the show they released their debut album, The Life Of A Song. Have not heard that one which got them an ACM award in 2010, but this is the follow up. Most of the vocals are from female Joey, but Rory shines on a couple and getting my favorite nod with his My Ol Man. Not a bad track on here with 8 tracks getting my love score. Yes I'm a country boy at heart. Zac Brown gets a guest vocal appearance on the only charting single, This One's For You. Surprised the album did as well as it did with no big single to push it.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Lyrics:
Quote:Well oot o' the East there came a hard man
Oh-ho, a' the way frae Brigton?
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

Well he went intae a pub and he come oot paralytic
Oh, VP and cider |VP is rum or sherry, I think
Ah-ha, what a hell of a mixture
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

(spoken: Sex rears its ugly head...)
Does this bus go tae the Dennistoun Palais?
Oh-ho, I'm lookin' fur a lumber |looking for a woman [1]
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

(spoken: Eyes up the talent, and lo and behold...)
In the dancin' he met Hairy Mary,
Oh, the flooer o' the Gorbals |flower
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

(spoken: Chats he up...)
Aw noo Mary, are ye dancin'?
"Oh no, it's just the way I'm staunin'" |standing
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

(spoken: Rebuffed!)
Well then, Mary, yer one in a million,
"Oh-ho, so's yer chances!"
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

(spoken: Rebuffed again!)
Well then Mary, can I run ye hame?
Oh-ho, I've got a pair of sandshoes,

"A ha-ha, ye're hell of a funny!"
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

(spoken: Never say die. Sways aboot nonchalantly,
picking his nails with a bayonet. An' he knocks her off...)
Well, doon through the back-close, an' intae the dunny, |[2]
Oh-ho, it wasnae fur the first time, |wasn't
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

Then oot came her mammy - she was goin' tae the cludgie, |[3]
Oh-ho, I buggered off sharpish,
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

Noo Hairy Mary's lookin' for her hard man,
Oh-ho, he's jined the Foreign Legion |joined
Ah-ha, Sahara unner ra camels, |under the camels
Cod liver oil and the orange juice

Then Hairy Mary's had a little baby
Oh-ho, its faither's in the army
Ah-ha, glory hallelujah
Cod liver oil and the orange juice
