and another one ....

Derek Shulman was born on this day in 1947, in Glascow, Scotland, one of the three skilled multi-instrumentalist brothers who formed Gentle Giant in the seventies; Derek was also the lead vocalist. Nowadays, he’s a big deal record exec, co-owner of 2Plus Music & Entertainment.

Critics have slammed Gentle Giant’s Giant for a Day, but the funny thing is that even although I haven’t heard this album in what feels like forever, I seem to remember most of the words! Hoping the record is still languishing in the stack somewhere! …

So - from their worst received offering of the decade during which they were active, and which is not typical of their very complex work, but which I must’ve liked since I obviously listened to it quite a lot –

Happy Birthday to Steve Hackett, who, as it turns out, is one day older than his former Genesis bandmate, Peter Gabriel. They are 66 this year, and Steve was born in Pimlico, London. His status as guitarist is that of virtuoso, and he’s mastered a few other stringed things too.

He enjoys taking on classical projects and has worked extensively with his brother John who is a magnificent flautist – their Sketches of Satie is just marvellous. He first got properly noticed when he joined Genesis, after which he went solo, with one or two collaborations along the way; the supergroup GTR was one of those, as was Squackett, although they only yielded a miserly one album each.

Seems to me that nothing this man does is frivolous, not that I’ve heard all his releases, but I’m willing to bet on it.

From Out of the Tunnel’s Mouth – “Sleepers” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xdlzUbfGEQ

From Squackett’s A Life Within a Day – “The Summer Backwards” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVSkvkcRpI4

From his latest, Wolflight – “Dust and Dreams” (instrumental alert!) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJw9Ln9TmMM

And the nothing, if not rousing, opener from Beyond the Shrouded Horizon, “Loch Lomond” – the whole album is a delight IMHO ...

Happy Birthday to Peter Gabriel who was born on this day in 1950, in Surrey, England. Formerly of Genesis and with a stellar solo career to his credit, he’s a composer, singer, songwriter, flautist, piano player, committed humanitarian activist and showman. Aside from his ten solo releases, he’s written a couple of serious soundtrack albums which are worth investigating – including Passion, music for The Last Temptation of Christ, and The Long Walk Home, for The Rabbit Proof Fence.

I really like Plays Live which, as the name implies, is a selection of his live material – a good selection IMHO – and a fairly comprehensive compilation for anyone who wants one. From that – “I Have The Touch” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlo70hRMP3I

This song was first released on his eponymous debut album which is also referred to as ‘Car’ - quite helpful since the following three were all eponymous. It was recorded by himself and released for the second time on Robert Fripp’s Exposure and it’s this version Mr G prefers …. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wS8V8vCUqw,

And from the same album, his first single (although this particular version is also from Plays Live) -

Eric Andersen was born on this day in 1943. Prolific folk/folk rock songwriter and singer who’s had his songs recorded by many musicians including Sir Bob, Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, Judy Collins, the Grateful Dead, Francoise Hardy, Rick Danko, Linda Thompson, etc., etc. He’s also released 25 albums of his own.

His latest release, from 2015 is based on the writings of Albert Camus and is fairly heavy going, unless you’re in the mood for engaging your intellect, so I quickly abandoned that one and chose to listen to the much simpler and quite beautiful Be True To You from 1975. What I would have preferred to hear in its entirety, had I been able to (stupid YouTube), would have been Stages: The Lost Album.

Apparently the tapes got lost!! How the hell does that even happen?! They were found almost twenty years later – forty boxes of master tapes just sitting around in Columbia’s vaults, if you please. Kinda difficult to misplace forty boxes .... you’d think! I’d have been so mad. Anyway –it features guest artists such as Leon Russell, Joan Baez and Dan Fogelberg so should be rather interesting.

I had not heard any of his work prior to now – astonishing how much lovely music is out there – could definitely use a few more pairs of ears and an extra listening channel or two in my brain!!
