BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E-STREET BAND @ Perth Arena 5th Feb,2014....
sometimes,when you wait your whole musical life to see one of your "idols" in concert your optimism/expectations can be set too high for any artist to live up to(believe me,its happened to me a few times!)...but not with The Boss...!
Bruce and band were on stage for around 3hrs and 20minutes. they covered his entire career with song selection, including(obviously) three tracks from the latest "high hopes" studio album...
these guys rocked it up for the entire time,Springsteen never faltered once in his vocal delivery.
he picked some young girl out of the audience to sing the chorus of "waiting on a sunny day", picked an old lady from the audience to dance with him during "dancing in the dark", even a group of women who claimed to be "steve's angels"(fans of E Street guitarist Steve Van Zandt) were allowed on stage for one song to 'boogie with Steve'.
The Boss ran into the crowd section several times(without his security guys in tow!) and even crowd-surfed his way back to the stage from about 40yds out in the crowd..
the whole band were enjoying the playing live thing as was evident by their huge grins/smiles whenever the cameras picked them up...
there was a five member brass section, and a three part black gospel group backing him on some songs making a total of 18 persons on stage throughout(including Bruce)
one cover was played tonight,the old soul song "shout", he also played a bit of Buddy's "not fade away",Roy's "pretty woman" and a couple of lines from an old Impressions track which i cannot remember before morphing into his own tracks.
the usual suspects were played in the show...hungry heart,born to run,the river,dancing in the dark,because the night,badlands & thunder road(which was the final track of the night), missing from the set was his biggest hit "born in the usa", but along with that stupid 'dancing in the dark' song were 'darlington county' and 'working on the highway' from the 'born in the usa' album...
it was an intense set of pure old fashioned rock and roll from start to finish...
totally proffessional(without being precious),yet laid back enough to feel like a jam session...
Bruce may be past his prime at age 63(ish), but he kept going full of energy and vitality until the end.
the guy is all class,his E-Street Band are still a tight outfit,especially Max Wienberg(drummer) who can hold a beat until he has to stop...!
this show was everything i expected it to be...The Boss still knows how to rock and roll in concert as good as anyone in the business

her favourite Boss track is "dancing in the dark", which IMO, is not really a Springsteen sounding song!

THE HOLLIES @ Crown Theatre,Burswood 7th Feb 2014
Dani and I just got back from seeing The Hollies here in Perth...
unfortunately main vocalist alan Clarke retired a few years ago(three original members and the guy who took over when Nash left were there), Clarke did not sing all their hits but did sing probably 60% of them...
the vocalist who took his role is from the Hollies classic era but never found his niche in music...luckly for him, he has now...
his vocal quality and tone is almost identical to Clarke, had i listened to him without watching i would have swore it was Clarke!
those guys were on stage for 2hrs, pretty much covered their singles catalogue, but also did a cover of Springsteen's classic "sandy"..that one was okay!,
the rest of the show was very good, good tight playing from the whole band, very good harmonies also...
all up a good show from a group that were up there with Beatles and Stones for sales figures back in the day...
i'd probably score these guys a respectable 7/10, but after seeing Springsteen two nights earlier no-one could follow that show!
Dani also liked the show...
as a footnote to the last post of mine here Dani rated Springsteen 10/10 for his show and ability to get the crowd involved in what he did, but only gave him 6/10 for the songs, partly due to the fact that she didnt know a lot of them(she has none of his albums and only knows his singles catalogue), so average out those scores and i guess her rating for him came out a respectable 8/10!
she hasnt scored The Hollies but she enjoyed it, so it got a pass mark from her tonight!
