There is no reason to rank artists by artificial rankings in categories--leave that for the small minds. Use guides such as MD to find stuff you never knew existed. I mostly agree. What, for instance is meant by ‘top’ in this context? If it means the five composers who’ve moved me the most and who I really wouldn’t want to live without my answer would be simple :-
1: J.S.Bach.
2: J.S.Bach.
3: J.S.Bach.
4: J.S.Bach.
5; J.S.Bach.

It’s an interesting question, were the Beatles really a Rock band? They took ‘rock’ in so many new directions I’d like to put them in a wider category except I don’t have a name for it.

I also have a difficult time to affix them with one genre since they wrote and performed such a diverse catalogue. Wiki states rock/pop which seems to undermine them. One could add art rock, folk rock and experimental music in the mix ! Their superb song writing and the genius of melody sets them apart from any band even to this day ! They were also very proficient instrumentally which is an important fact.

We shouldn’t be discussing this here I guess but one of the odd aspects of the period when the Beatles were so big was the way people were either Stones or Beatles fans. I was one of the few who found something is both and thought neither was consistently perfect. The Stones, when off their faces on heroin etc could sound awfully sloppy. The Beatles, when on acid and guru worship, could come over far too sugery sweet for my taste. But hey, were would pop/rock in general be without a little chemical assistance?
