New Jersey 5 member band formed in 2005. Name is from a Shakespeare play. Album name is the name of a Civil War era battleship. This is their sophomore effort. A concept album with Civil War themes. The last track on the album is reference to a battle in which that warship entered, and is the best track here. First hearing of the band for me and I'm getting some Replacements or Pogues in those up tempo tracks. The live clips are rather rough, but they're into it.

California band formed in 1992 and are now looked on as juvenile pop/punk pioneers who have influenced many bands. Tom Delonge, Mark Hoppus and Scott Raynor are the founding members and are on this second release, which brought them platinum (RIAA) success, with singles of Dammit (#26) and Josie, and the album reaching #67. Greater success was yet to come.

California 3 piece formed in 2000, with their fifth album. Aaron Hemphill (percussion, guitar, synth), Julian Gross (drums) and Angus Andrew (vocals, guitar). That's the current lineup although Gross was not a full time member initially. They are currently signed to Muse Records and this is my introduction. Only a couple of tracks I thought were good, but I'm a hard sell. A loosely based concept album around the spaces people create to survive in L.A. Scary stuff. I felt some Sonic Youth and Mission Of Burma influences. Scissor is the first single, and although I don't get it, the video is pretty cool. I never get videos anyway.

Canadian member of Broken Social Scene also does solo work and this is the fifth, currently signed to the Arts & Crafts label. Debut hearing for me. Some country/folk leanings surface, but not enough to call it that. Picking up some Dylan sounds. Three border line great tracks makes it come out pretty high on my list. First single of Love is A Dirty Word.

I like this band despite their sound harking back to early Post-Punk; think of a cross between Joy Division & early U2, and you'll be somewhere near.
The sort of band that sound like they could do great things live...

California band formed in 2005 consisting of Julian Harmon, Tim Or, Jonathan Chue and Christpher Chu out with their 2nd studio album. Have toured with Death Cab For Cutie and Grizzly Bear. Produced by Chris Chu and Grizzly Bear bassist Chris Taylor. Said to be quite different than the more poppish debut. First time hearing them for me. There are a few good tracks here, but ends up being very much like the Broken Bells I heard recently, and gets about the same grade, just missing my buy list. Most of these, including my favorite, are live clips, and not very good ones.

Iceland strikes again. Formed in 2007 and the second lp is here. Initially a solo project by Sindri Sigfússon, now expanded to a 7 piece, none of whose names I could pronounce correctly. Exposure on a Greys Anatomy and Gossip Girl episodes have brought some recognition. Now set for their first american tour. First hearing them for me and I don't like them whispery vocals. A way too mellow Arcade Fire.

Brother/sister duo from Australia with their second album. Started performing together in 2006 at local clubs. Mostly acoustic numbers that could be considered folk and I started to put this in that thread, but some are a little harder, so I ended up here once again. This is hard. It's just all music to me. Already a big hit in the homeland with this entering the charts at #1. First single is And The Boys. Beautiful voice for Julia, just like Joanna Newsom.
