James Patrick Page, OBE was born on this day 1944, in Middlesex, England. I’m sure any elaboration is unnecessary! …

This clip is from It Might Get Loud – Jimmy, Jack and the Edge playing “In My Time of Dying” – pretty cool (great documentary) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6rDTL9kI5o

… and then there’s this –

Michael Schenker was born on this day in 1955, in Sarstedt, West Germany. Rock guitarist known for his tenure with UFO and the Scorpions and his early preference for the Gibson Flying V as well as being recognised well up there in the lists people make of greatest rock/metal guitarists/legends, etc., He now uses his signature Dean V.

I like that he’s heavy, yet melodic – as on his solo album Adventures of the Imagination, which is eminently listenable, even for me (with the very well regarded Aynsley Dunbar on drums, whose birthday it is today, also, and who has worked with the likes of Jeff Beck, Bowie, Zappa, Coverdale, Journey, John Mayall) … the lead track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzrSNh3mIH8

He’s had several projects, such as his Michael Schenker Group – this is from MSG's In The Midst of Beauty – The line-up: Michael Schenker (Guitar) Gary Barden (Vocals) Neil Murray (Bass) Don Airey (Keyboards) Simon Phillips (Drums).

Charlie Gillingham was born on this day in 1960, in Torrance, California. He studied philosophy and artificial intelligence before becoming involved in the music industry – must’ve made for some interesting debates!

He plays/played pretty much anything keys related for Counting Crows, including the Hammond B3, accordion, piano, mellotron and something called a Chamberlin, which is a precursor to the mellotron, as well as bass, guitar, clarinet and oboe, and backing vocals.

From August and Everything After, because it’s the only album of theirs I own …

1955: PAUL KELLY:
Australian singer, songwriter, poet, artist, screenwriter....
folk, alt-folk, alt rock, country singer,
rose to fame with his 1986 debut album "gossip", which incidently was a double album on vinyl...
sings songs about life, everyday people....
just released his latest album last year after touring the country with Neil Finn as a double act...
one of the best singer songwriters of his generation not just in Australia but worldwide,
fans of Bob Dylan would most definitely be fans of Kelly, but you don't have to be a Kelly fan to like Dylan!
here's one of his early hits in Australia and one of my favourites...

John Lees was born on this day in 1947, in Lancashire, UK. He is the founder and lead singer/guitarist of Barclay James Harvest – still active, by all accounts.-

A John Lees epic from their acclaimed second album, Once Again ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0in8PYyBos

.... and BJH was so often referred to as ‘the poor man’s Moody Blues’ that Lees eventually wrote a song with that exact title – an obvious play on “Nights in White Satin” – well done, IMHO -

1969: DAVE GROHL
drummer with grunge band Nirvana,
after Cobain's he formed Foo Fighters,
took on vocal duties and ended up a guitarist...
Foo fighters' early albums were pretty good, their last couple
were a bit lame IMO, but hey, you cant get it right all the time!
here's the first FF track that came to mind when I saw it was his birthday:

Cathal Smyth, aka Chas Smash was born on this day in 1959, in London. He released his debut solo album, A Comfortable Man, last year after having been with Madness for almost their entire history. He’s the trumpet guy, although actually a multi-instrumentalist and singer as well as writer - of some of their biggest hits too!

This solo came about as the result of the breakup of his marriage of 28 years which left him totally floored, and which is, basically, the musical expression of that experience. So no nutty Madness stuff on this one – although there’s bound to be the odd similar strain showing through now and then. I listened to it out of curiosity – goodness – there are no holds barred, in confessional terms. He’s opened himself right up here; and whilst not always comfortable, there’s something endearing about vulnerability.

I found it quite interesting that he also viewed the making of this album as a chance to examine himself, and find out whether or not he was an "imposter", at least, musically speaking – I guess that’s what 35 years of Madness will do!

He needn’t have worried. IMHO this is not the work of an imposter – in fact, although I may not necessarily go out and buy it, (or maybe I will, since it’s beginning to grow on me, and us Venusians are well known for changes of mind, lol!) the album seems to have real merit and sounds well produced. I very much liked the track “A Requiem for Common Sense” which I can’t find a clip for, other than audio - http://www.kboing.com.br/cathal-smyth/1-1366053/

Here’s one that obliged … “Goodbye Planet Earth” – a live version

1948, Ronnie Van Zant:
vocalist with Lynyrd Skynyrd who had the 1974 US No. 8 single 'Sweet Home Alabama' and the 1982 UK No. 21 single 'Freebird'. Van Zant died in a plane crash between shows from Greenville, South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana on October 20th 1977 along with bandmates Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines. Remaining band members survived, although all were seriously injured.

I don't need an excuse to play this track which was written as an 'answer song' to a couple of tracks
Neil Young sung on his 'harvest' album...
notice Van Zant is wearing a 'tonights the night' t-shirt in the live clip...LOL
