Born on this day ... - Music Head - 31-12-2015 Psy - Korean native born on this day in 1977 that would make him 38 demonstrating the depths to which popular music can sink Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 31-12-2015 Could be worse.... Could be that stupid "what sound does a fox make" thing. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 31-12-2015 Itâs a shock to find that Andy Summers turns 73 today! How did that happen??! Gee â time flies when youâre having fun (and even when youâre not ⦠apparently). His solo albums number in excess of those released by The Police and heâs had some interesting collaborations along the way - not what one might expect, with Robert Fripp, for example. Heâs also an author, an exhibiting photographer, and has composed several film scores. His site - http://andysummers.com/ Iâve listened to some of his solo stuff before but hadnât realised that his career goes waaay back, to Eric Burdon and The Animals. Guess heâs a bit older than Sting then! I really like his First You Build a Cloud, with Ben Verdery, but YT is not generous with clips, perversely, there are plenty from The Golden Wire which wouldâve been a great album without the tinned drumming; as it stands, itâs incredibly annoying! Hereâs a random clip then â since time is fleeting ⦠(instrumental of the lounge variety - definitely not suited to revelry, sorry ... ) Born on this day ... - Music Head - 03-01-2016 Stephen Stills - Texas native born on this day in 1945 that would make him 71 always loved this one Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-01-2016 When I saw CSN a couple of years ago Stills was the best vocalist of the three, Nash was still pretty good also, Crosby was average IMO. Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 06-01-2016 1953: Malcom Young: lead guitarist and co writer of AC/DC... he is the younger brother of George who was a founding member of Easybeats, and older brother to Angus, rhythm guitarist with AC/DC he no longer has any part in the band after being diagnosed with dementia a year or so ago... he is unable to play guitar and resides in a nursing home in Australia. here's AC/DC's best track (IMO) Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-01-2016 1944: MIKE McGEAR: lead vocals, writer for UK band Scaffold.... is also the younger brother of Paul McCartney.... Scaffold released around twenty singles in the UK, but only had four hits... it has been rumoured over the years that Paul McCartney wrote several of their tunes but gave them to McGear....both parties dispute that fact... artists such as Elton John, Jack Bruce, Hendrix, Graham Nash and Wings played on their recordings over the years... this is their biggest hit(a novelty song),the studio version featured a then unknown Elton John on keys, Jack Bruce and Hendrix on guitar and Nash on harmonies.... this link is a live version rom a tv special. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 07-01-2016 Missed a week of birthdays! Sorry. Iâm sure those musicians whoâve been left out are mortified! Lol!! Dave Cousins was born on this day in 1945, in Hounslow, England. He basically IS Strawbs; leader, singer and chief songwriter, as well as playing guitar, banjo and Appalachian dulcimer. Heâs another muso of a similar ilk to Brian May â ok, not quite a rocket scientist, but he does have degrees in statistics and pure mathematics. Heâs released a number of solo albums and been active in the biz since 1967 â no mean feat ⦠and despite the fact that most people on this board have probably never heard of him, he continues to tour, successfully, with the present line-up of his Acoustic Strawbs. His prose borders on the purple (or is âambitiousâ as someone once said) â I donât care â I think his melodies and words are fantastic. They changed a bit along the way and got a bit iffy towards the eighties, but the best stuff endures. Generally speaking - to describe the music, itâs a little bit folk and quite a lot prog with their best period spanning the late 60âs and most of the 70âs - IMHO. (CH and MH you were talking about Sandy Denny â she was with Strawbs before Fairport Convention â but you probably knew that! Incidentally, she was born on 06 January.) I have previously been a little scathing about the way Cousinsâ voice sounds of late, however, having listened to Prognostic which was released last year and which escaped detection (up to now) by my clearly faulty radar, I stand corrected. Ok, so itâs mostly re-mastering of older numbers with one or two new tracks, but is no less impactful for all that, and if you donât know Strawbs, itâs not a bad compilation type of album to get a good feel of what theyâre all about (Adam Wakeman contributes keys on the newer tracks, so the Wakeman legacy continues). from Dave Cousinsâ solo album, Two Weeks Last Summer â the re-mastered version of a brilliant track (which now appears on Prognostic in this particular format) with long-term Strawbs stalwart Dave Lambert, Papa Wakeman and Roger Glover, to drop a few names ⦠Wakemanâs piano is just gorgeous on this â (terribly clichéd, but cascades of notes is exactly what they are!) ⦠ Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-01-2016 Top notch bio of Cousins Ruby.... Never heard of him but I obviously know who Strawbs were in their heyday.... Born on this day ... - Ruby - 07-01-2016 ^Thanks CH. |
