What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 14-10-2012 ^oh yes Rusty, one of the early pioneers in the free jazz experimental movement...thanks for the clip! What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 16-10-2012 ![]() WYNTON MARSALIS & ERIC CLAPTON "play the blues" cd,2011. another of Corey's recommendations for me.... as im not really a fan of 'the blues' i bawked for several months before i finally gave in and bought this one, and im glad i did....its a fine piece of work IMO for someone only vaguely familliar with this genre... i had to research who exactly Wynton was for this one...he was born in new Orleans in 1961, by the age of 20 he was the most respected blues guy down in Louisianna. well, i did assume he would have been respected or Old Slow Hand himself wouldnt have bothered i guessed... anyway, these are all covers of old blues songs that EC handpicked from ones he loved as a kid, and WM arranged them in a modernist-traditional way. if you notice on the track list, there is a version of EC's "layla"...apparently, one of the band members insisted they include it on here, it has a more sombre feel to it than the other versions i have heard previously. all-up, a very good live album IMO...hey, anything that brings the old music back from the dead to possibly a new audience is worthy, and some lovely live performances included also(i guess theyre from the dvd of the show which is a bonus disc with the cd(but i havent watched it yet!) Love some feed back on this Video! http://youtu.be/fdEErri5zJE What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 04-12-2012 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Not one of my favorite crooners, but he'll do in a pinch. No match for Dean or Perry. Most popular in the 60's, but that style of music was fading fast, except for an elite group. This is a double album, and I'm not sure if it's a compilation or not. The man won a Best New Artist grammy in 1963 based on his single of What Kind Of Fool Am I. That one is not on here, and I don't know if anything here was a hit, maybe by another artist. Most of these have been covered many times. Three love tracks, which probably get that grade because I can't remember who else recorded them. Who Can I Turn To gets my best and What Now My Love the worst. Overall a good album by another crooner that was born too late. What Are You Listening To? - Frownland - 05-12-2012 Colin Stetson - Those Who Didn't Run I recently found this guy and have been digginghis work a lot. He does ambient jazz textures on bass sax. It's mostly a foray into multiphonics (getting multiple sounds out of an instrument that generally plays one note at a time) and a display of Stetson's circular breathing. The intensity that he goes into with only one instrument is amazing, it sounds like a group of wales swimming in an avant-garde jazz ocean. Stetson wears a dog collar with a microphone in it to pick up on his vocals when he sings and plays at the same time. This album consists of two ten minute tracks and both are very similar but still retain an amazing quality about them. Stetson is becoming one of my favourite innovators in jazz. What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 05-12-2012 Frownland Wrote: I have no doubt that this guy is really trying to be innovative but to be quite honest I would rather listen to my vacuum cleaner. Don't like this at all. |
