RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 01-06-2025

ive recently posted both  "listen like thieves" (2.4) and "kick" (1.9) so i wont be returning to those as part of this series so on with the listens:

INXS  "X"  vinyl  1990

from Lynne's vinyl collection
their seventh studio album.
the X refers to "10" roman numerals, in this case the 10 is for 10 years since their debut album
so on with the album
there are some rocking tracks on here, some softer moments  and a couple of funky sounds also similar to those by Prince, namely on "know the difference" and "who pays the price" but i do not like those two named tracks
love the use of harmonica on here which helps give the sound a slightly new sound also
personally i have never been a fan of "suicide blonde" but after two listens of the album i found it to be a very good album opening track and sums up the vibe of the album really well
and as always i feel theres a fair bit of filler on their albums which is a shame because when they are good they are very good IMO
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite:

side 1:
1:  suicide blonde  **
2:  disappear  ***
3:  the stairs  ***
4:  faith in each other  **
5:  by my side  ***

side 2:
1:  lately  *
2:  who pays the price  *
3:  know the difference  *
4:  bitter tears  ***
5:  on my way  *
6:  hear the sound  ***

ROLLING STONES   "emotional rescue"  cd  1980

 a revisit
their fifteenth studio album
their 'disco' album of sorts with several tracks that suit the genre but are still quintessentially Stones sounding blues rocker LOL
(no mater what they try to do they still sound like themselves) hahaha
that said, im not a big fan of their studio albums but they made a great trilogy of albums at this time, "some girls", this one and "tattoo you".
love just about everything about this album as it sounds like a carefree uplifting fun listen
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

fun little foot-tapper:

RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 04-06-2025

INXS  "full moon, dirty hearts"  vinyl  1993

from Lynne's vinyl collection
their nineth of ten with Hutchence on vocals
a heavier grungy sound on this one than one would expect from the band
opening track has a Midnight Oil vibe
second track has a Rolling Stones vibe
third has a generic garage rock vibe
INXS sounding fourth track then the fifth has a funky vibe with mainly spoken vocals
sixth track has a Stones vibe again and so on
so not really a real INXS album, theyre just grunging up their sound
the sixth track features Ray Charles on vocals and they follow that with a sultry Chrissie Hynde duet
to be honest i think they had nowhere to go, no vision with this one
even the slower songs seem to go nowhere and theyre usually my faves by the band
as a footnote,
when Hutchence presented Oasis with the 'best new band' award at the Brits the following year Noel Gallagher said "has-beens should not present awards to gonna-bees", judging by this album i get the sentiment of his remark (but do not condone the arrogance in it!)
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

fav is the unlikely duet with Ray Charles

side 1:
1:  days of rust  *
2:  the gift  *
3:  make your peace  *
4:  time  **
5:  im only looking  **
6:  please (you got that...)  **

side 2:
1:  full moon, dirty hearts  **
2:  freedom deep  *
3:  kill the pain  *
4:  cut your roses down  *
5:  the messenger  *
6:  viking juice  **

INXS  "elegantly wasted"  vinyl, 1997

from Lynne's vinyl collection
their tenth and final album with Michael Hutchence so i wont go any further than this one
a return of sorts to their so called 'classic' sound on this one
a distinct Rolling Stones sound on several songs album
so dance-rock/pop-gospel/funk-rock/acoustic and a ballad or two on here
a decent eclectic mix and i never knew any of the songs from this one previously
so it is really good to go into an album with no expectations or prejudices
and also a real surprise when an album you know nothing about is actually a winner.
**EDIT**
i guess there is one song i knew previously, my favourite, because it was part of the "face Off" Travolta/Cage soundtrack.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

fav:

side 1:
1:  show me (cherry baby)  *
2:  elegantly wasted  **
3:  everything  ***
4:  dont lose your head  ***
5:  searching  ***
6:  im just a man ***

side 2:
1:  girl on fire  ***
2:  we are thrown together  ***
3:  shake the tree ***
4:  she is rising  **
5:  building bridges *
6:  shine  **

which is exactly why I listen to music I've never heard before
well said mate

RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 05-06-2025

^^
thanks MH
sometimes it works but mostly doesnt, its those rare winners that we strive to hear for sure.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
i was actually surprised after finishing the 10 INXS albums to now admit that they were actually a pretty good band overall but like most bands had a few hiccups along the way.
i certainly have a lot more respect for them now than i did a couple of weeks ago and would even consider myself a bit of a fan now

CROSBY, STILLS & NASH - CSN

[Image: 250px-Crosby%2C_Stills_%26_Nash_-_CSN.jpg]

This trio remains the most extraordinary and serendipitous confluence of talent and skill IMHO – perfectly matched voices. And the funny thing is that I can’t find this album mentioned on the site?? Seems highly unlikely – unless I’m not searching properly. (Edit: I wasn't - must've missed a comma or something ...)

The reason I’m listening to it is because I had a message from a friend who is currently in England – she’s visiting Winchester Cathedral today and my brain immediately went to Graham Nash’s song. There are some simply beautiful tracks on this album, as with most of their early work. My world of music would be so much poorer without these guys …

"Carried Away"

... and the final track which lends new meaning to ending on a high note! Or an upbeat one, at least.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE "Memphis rock and soul"  cd,  2016:

a revisit
Melissa's fourteenth album...
only one I own for some strange unknown reason?....
a covers set of old Stax Records soul/R+B and blues tunes...
her raspy throaty vocals suit these songs...
has an authentic feel to it...
an okay album but starts wearing a bit thin in places

OASIS  "(whats the story) morning glory"  cd  1995

a revisit
their second of seven
i had forgotten how good this album was
a solid rock album
only thing i am not overly keen on is "wonderwall" because radio killed it for me
everything else is pretty hot.
album would rank around 2.5 and is probably my second favourite of theirs after 2002's Heathen Chemistry
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

could never understand why this wasnt released as a single in their homeland??

[Image: 250px-The_Pretenders_-_Last_of_the_Independents.png]

PRETENDERS  "last of the independents"  cd,  1994

had never posted this one on MD before...
their sixth studio album
not their usual style for some of this
theres a funky tune, one that is slightly psychedelic and bits where there are sex moans from Chrissie
all up, not the best Pretenders album by any means and the chart positions and sales figures mirror that
it is still likeable, just not what is expected, album would rank 1.8 from me, the lowest of the ones i own
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

fav is the lead off (predictable) single
