Born on this day ... - Ruby - 10-12-2015

Peter Sarstedt was born on this day in 1941 in Delhi, India, to British parents. There is one particular song, that in whatever its many guises, is immediately associated with his name …

Fantastic track Ruby.
That song still gets regular airplay here in Perth on the 'oldies'/'classics' radio stations.

A line from this track that I always remember is

'I remember the back streets of Naples, two children begging in rags'.

When I visited Naples I decided to walk the back streets and the poverty was appaling. Seriously ill pensioners in need of medical care starving on the pavements. Really, really sad to see. A result of the relentless control of the city by the mafia in the preceding decades.

^Sad that many societies seem to be terribly dismissive and neglectful of their elderly. So wrong.

David Gates is 75 today - he’s from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Most famously the frontman for very successful seventies soft rock band, Bread, as well as having a solo career – his skills cover song-writing, production and … cattle ranching.

Bread created some timeless melodies, a few of which have been covered either well, or not so much, like Telly Savalas’ spoken version of “If” which was just plain ill-advised IMHO, and I’m not crazy about Boy Georges’ rendition of “Everything I Own” either, but then the only thing he’s sung that I really like is “The Crying Game”.

On the other hand, I think Cake put quite an interesting spin on “Guitar Man” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iPBJR1r8zI and I think Marc Cohn made a very creditable funked up version of “Make it With You” – (with India Arie) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dT2O-y3rd0

… and now, back to basic Bread! From Manna –

im a big fan of Bread....
(I also like marmalade and jam)
I actually liked Boy Georges version of Everything I Own when it came out, my enthusiasm for it has worn a bit thin over the years though.

Cy Curnin was born on this day in Wimbledon, England in 1957. He’s the lead vocalist for The Fixx – yup – they’re still out there, although the members also have side and solo projects. Cy plays keys as a session muso for other artists as well as on some Fixx releases, he also plays guitar and writes. He’s released four solo albums and an EP of instrumental ambient music, Cinema for the Blind, which sounds interesting, from a brief listen to some samples.

One of the side projects he’s a part of is the Love, Hope, Strength Foundation, an organisation put together by musicians that raises awareness of, and funds for leukemia and cancer sufferers, as well as advocating for the registration of bone marrow donors. They do this through sponsored treks to perform in various elevated locations; Everest base camp, Machu Picchu, Kilimanjaro, and so on.

Here’s The Fixx’s “Moving Mountains” – a single written for the LHSF – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST8aFP91YeI

From Cy’s solo album Solar Minimum – “Sail” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA2RBBbxTXo

And from their classic album Reach the Beach –

1989: Taylor Swift:
that would make her the ripe old age of......26!
she's achieved more in her short life than a hell of a lot of other singers/performers ever did
I have ALL of her albums...
she is not "country", she never has been "country"....!
IMO she started as an acoustic based storyteller/balladeer, a little bit of country here and there, but
overall, she is a POP SINGER!
here's one of her early hits this time round:
