Music Head Wrote:#450 - Wailers - I Shot The Sheriff - 1973

running recap for me - 3's=26, 2's=18, 1's=7
this one - **
from the album: Burnin'
Written by Bob Marley
Produced by Chris Blackwell
Chart action:

the players:
Peter Tosh - Guitar, Vocals, keyboards
Bob Marley - Guitar, Vocals
Bunny Wailer - Percussion, Vocals
Aston "Family Man" Barrett - Bass, Guitar
Carlton "Carlie" Barrett - drums
Earl Lindo - Keyboards

I confess, I prefer the Clapton version.
What was it you said about "...stupid Americans hijacked..."? Oh, right--EC is or was an UKster whereas Sting and Co. were those self-same Americanos, smug as all get-out.

Bette Midler did a very nice cover of this song which hit the chart in 1983. Strange there is no UK chart showing for this. Was it not released as a single there?
Here's a demo of that...with a kicker.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J35zjSsdjiw

Buddha l
Buddah/Buddha was a much more important label than they are given credit for. Remembered principally for the "bubble gum" stuff they foisted but look at what they imprinted or distributed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddah_Records
PS My ambition for a long time was to be a Pip but I never got the call...

SteveO Wrote:exactly Crazy mate...as we all know music is subjective however looking at it in a practical sense and not mentioning my favorite Elvis tune, Love Me Tender is his best recognised song ! And yes Suspicious Minds is definitely one of my favs along with many others !..what a voice and what a performer !!!!!
Wonder how many people got confused by this (this very much includes me)? Here's the original and a cover by some guy (although he had it as an album cut first): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gzY-PrwwHk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNJjDR9RPqk

About "Young Blood" by the Coasters--can you for a minute think this would get issued today, the necessary laws concerning offenses against youth being as vigorously prosecuted as they are? Nevertheless, I like anything Leiber/Stoller with Doc Pomus put in front of the only long-lasting serio-comic group. Best way to catch up: http://www.allmusic.com/album/50-coastin-classics-anthology-mw0000090269 << if you go to Amazon for this, I recuse myself from consideration as a seller.

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:not a 'classic' from Little Richard IMO so "**"
Mostly agree with that but this here one is certified, sanctified and deep-fat fried (if I may be permitted to quote myself): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_wWkvd39VE
Litttle Richard wasn't the only crazy, not even from that era--Esquerita and that Macon flamin' groovy Wayne Cochran come to mind. And let's don't start with those West Coast rock-a-billy nut jobs. Mr. Cochran will get his props in a future BES edition--he sure rates it. Alongside the estimable Mitch Ryder << not enough stage presence to merit entry here but oh what a voice and delivery!
Esquerita http://www.allmusic.com/album/vintage-voola-mw0000023834 (the late Mr. Koda knew his schiz and was a heckuva player himself--worth a look-up) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G5tqli-t7M Indeed a, er, "body" shaker
Wayne Cochran http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-white-knight-of-soul-1964-72-get-down-with-it%21-mw0000140112 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5_GstlPL64 << Jaco Pastorius got his start playing in WC's band, the C.C. Riders. I'll bet Music-Head could dance like this, back in the day

SteveO Wrote:Wow how could I forget this song MH ! One of the first singles I bought ! Big hit up here in 67. I was entranced with the song...so dark and controversial for the subject matter at the time. I love this great song !
About "Ode to Billy Joe"--The movie wasn't as dismal as described in these pages and it wasn't a stuffed animal or over-age hound that exited abruptly the bridge either:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074995/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl << Give a thought to how terrifying it must have been to "come out" even to yourself in Mississippi in 1953--I'm guessing it ain't easy even now.
