Born on this day ... - Ruby - 05-12-2015 JJ Cale was born on this day in 1938 â he died in 2013. Now he was the master of the laconic, which makes all the more interesting the fact that he was so hugely influential. Eric Clapton (of course, since he famously covered a good few of his songs), Mark Knopfler and Neil Young all cite him as one of the most important artists in the history of rock. His sound never really changed much over the years and he didnât give a damn. I have to say it was a revelation listening to his final album, Roll On; I never realised he played drums, bass and piano in addition to his regular guitars. I like this track â with banjo and mandolin â all instruments courtesy of Mister Cale ⦠ Born on this day ... - Jerome - 05-12-2015 I don't have many JJ Cale albums. For me, his best was the album 'Five' - love the tracks 'Thirteen Days', 'Boiling Pot', 'Friday', 'Don't Cry Sister' & 'The Sensitive Kind'. I learnt how to improvise on my acoustic guitar (many moons ago) by playing notes and runs and fills over his music until I felt comfortable moving between scales and getting to the point where I did not have to think about where my fingers were going next. JJ Cale taught me that. His music is perfect (because it's so minimalist) for new/learning guitarists to experiment alongside while they are getting to grips with their new torture toy. https://youtu.be/XNvZn-ww-Lg Born on this day ... - Ruby - 06-12-2015 ^I only have Troubadour and 5. Of the two, 5 is my fav. Ira Gershwin was born on this day in 1896. He and brother, George, were a formidable song-writing duo and have earned a well-deserved spot in the annals. Ira was the lyricist and he continued to write for other musicians after his brother died. According to wiki â âIra Gershwin was a joyous listener to the sounds of the modern world. "He had a sharp eye and ear for the minutiae of living." He noted in a diary: "Heard in a day: An elevator's purr, telephone's ring, telephone's buzz, a baby's moans, a shout of delight, a screech from a 'flat wheel', hoarse honks, a hoarse voice, a tinkle, a match scratch on sandpaper, a deep resounding boom of dynamiting in the impending subway, iron hooks on the gutter.â I wonder what he wouldâve made of this somewhat radical reimagining of âI Got Rhythmâ â Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 06-12-2015 1955: Rick Buckler: that would make him 60! drummer with The Jam, who had 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four No.1 hits, The Jam held the distinction of being the second artist (after Slade) to have three singles debut on the UK charts at the coverted #1 spot. their final single also peaked at #1, therefore they literally disbanded at the peak of their career! 'That's Entertainment' and 'Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero?' remained the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK. not their best single but this linked track is one which bases its sound around Buckler's drumming... HC was a master storyteller IMO... his early albums were very good, but the latter ones had a bit of filler, regardless of that, I could listen to his stories everyday and still be enthralled with the whole thing! Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 09-12-2015 1958: Nick Seymour: that would make him 57 today... bassist for Crowded House.... younger brother of Hunters & Collectors' vocalist Mark Seymour... its pretty hard for me to pick one CH crack ahead of all others, but this is the one that came to my mind first: Born on this day ... - Ruby - 09-12-2015 Happy Birthday to Joan Armatrading â sheâs 65 today. Born on St Kitts, spent her early childhood in Antigua and then moved to Birmingham, England. Sheâs in a category of her own IMHO, an original. A marvellous songwriter with a lovely contralto, she gets big, lush, warm sounds into her songs; she says she is a âhitterâ when it comes to musical instruments, which need to be fairly robust in order to withstand her playing. Quoted via Wiki â "My songs aren't about me at all. They're always about love, the pain and anguish of it. But the way I've always written is from observation. They're about what I see other people going through. If the songs were about me I'd be so embarrassed I don't think I'd be able to walk out the front door." She went on to say: "the optimistic songs reveal a bit more of me because that's how I feel. I'm definitely a 'glass is half full' kind of a person." I havenât listened to any of her recent stuff â must put it on the endless list. It would be very helpful to have a few more pairs of ears!! One or two, or three or four favs ⦠could go on and on, but I wonât ⦠âLove by Youâ (Joe Jackson on the piano) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZaFOeRs9c4 âDown to Zeroâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brp8Va8XVQw âWillowâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQDsPIzqexQ âSave Meâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfO7u0m-2nc âDry Landâ - |
