BREAD "manna" cd, 1971

album chart placings: #21 US.
singles chart placings:
"let your love go"...#28 US.
"if".......................#4 US.

Gates and company's third studio set...
album starts off with a couple of blues riffed tracks, quite not like the Bread we often hear, but it works!
other than that the album is still strictly soft rock/folk rock, so the album goes in this thread!
songwriting is split between the members equally here...not Gates dominated like most of their materisl, but it is still a great album IMO...
probably my favourite Bread album(i own five)...

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Never liked Kid till he went country  He is so funny!! And what can I say about Jr. He is my fave!! He is so talented. Went to see him here and he played Every instrument on the stage. I also saw him in Georgia yrs. ago while he was still recovering from his fall. He was great though. One of the best concerts I've ever been. I got his drink from the stage (salt and water). Drank it too  Love his song about Ajax Mountain.

NEIL YOUNG "harvest" 1972, cd. #1 US,UK,Aust...and probably just about everywhere!

NY returned to his folk/country roots for this one by recording at least half the album in Nashville, the rest was recorded at his Broken Arrow ranch in California with the orchestrations for "a man needs a maid" being recoerded in London.
it is not the lovely, wholesome feelgood record that most people think it is, it is instead littered with songs about unrequitted love, searching for love and a place to belong, drug dependancy, allienation, superficiality of life etc...very deep, dark subject matter.
it did however give Neil a worldwide hit album and single in "heart of gold", something he deliberately steered away from after this, as he has put it numerous times: "i was cruising the highway and veered into the ditch, where i stayed and am comfortable with", he hated the media attention, the lights, the cameras, and everybody wanting a piece of him. the masteroiece of this album is the deeply depressing "needle and the damage done", written about not only the increased use of 'hard drugs' in society, but for Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and Stephen Stills, both of whom were spiralling out of control with their heroin addiction, shortly after Whitten died from his addiction, Stills took another decade to break the habit.
"old man" is a dedication to the caretaker who lived at Broken Arrow Ranch and showed the then prospective buyer NY around.
"a man needs a maid" is a song written for his then girlfriend/actress Carrie Snogress with whom he had a son with.
the worst song here for me is "heart of gold" as it is a very atypical simplistic song for NY, yet it is the one along with "four strong winds" that he is most remembered for.

Brilliant album, but far from his best. My "Harvest"-favourites are "A man needs a maid" and "Words" (even though I never understood what the latter was all about, lyrically). I prefer "After the gold rush" and "Rust never sleeps", but there is something magic about these songs, probably because they were my first meeting with this absolutely amazing musician and songwriter. Oh, and the title track should definitely have some harmonica between the verses.
