What Are You Listening To? - Lovely Linda - 28-08-2013

Shame on you Willie! You didn't know from the beginning Kris wrote this song? You go Trigger!! So glad I got to see all these guys live!! Waylon did a good job on the song. Never heard him sing it before even though I had a big crush on him for years. I think Janis Joplin sang this song better than any song she ever sang! Have you heard Crystal Bowersox sing the song SteveO?? She sounds alot like Janis. Very talented young woman!! Thanks for the video!! Loved it!!

Just misses a love mark, with three love tracks and nothing I don't like. Vince got his start in the
country rock band Pure Prairie League, known as a one hit wonder band with Amy. He was invited to join
Dire Straits and turned it down. He sings backup on their On Every Street album. He began his solo
career in '83 with RCA and was dropped three albums later after minor chart success. They should have
held on for one more as this MCA debut became his breakthrough making #2 on the country and crossed
over to #67 on the overall chart. Four singles released with the title track a #2 country hit. My fav
of Never Knew Lonely made #3. He can do pure country if he wants to, but has mainly chosen the watered
down type. The closest to the pure type here is a duet with Reba McEntire on Oklahoma Swing. Then we
have Emmylou and Patty Loveless for backup on two tracks. Randy Scruggs on guitar and a lot of other
players I don't know.

Sort of a let down here. I've come to expect any compilation that says Essential to be a love album.
This falls short of that, I think because it only covers his RCA years, which only consisted of 3
albums. Not sure if all these tracks are from those albums. I know the last one was on his first album
with MCA, which I reviewed yesterday. This is an earlier version, but I can't tell much difference. I
had three love tracks from that last album and only four from this one which has twice as many tracks.
Most of them would fall in the soft rock area for me. A few country ones stand out which is where Vince
is at his best. Still, I like this album and I do get 20 tracks, but a later compilation would have
served me better.

Looks like I gave up on Vince after this one. Not that I wouldn't buy anything else, but it would have
to be one of those impulse buys out of the discount bin. He's had plenty of albums since this one, but
I don't know if he ever lived up to the potential I had for him. This is his eighth album and featured
5 singles of which Pretty Little Adriana and A Little More Love fared the best with a #2 peak on the
country chart. My fav of Worlds Apart reached #5. The album reached #3 country and #24 overall and the
Canadians liked it too, with a #5 country. There are two versions of the title track here, with the second
being a more traditional bluegrass sound, and better. I guess I'm on the outside with Vince as his albums
continue to chart high, and he has racked up the awards. To give the man his due, how about 4 ACM awards,
12 CMA awards, 20 grammys, and inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2007. Take that Music Head.
