Indiana farm boy became the midwests answer to the boss. Not sure why, but you gotta have a label, and that one somehow seems appropriate. This first as John Cougar Mellancamp (previous efforts were as John Cougar) this was his 7th release and the one that put him on top with 3 top 20 hits, Pick Houses (#8), Authority Song (#15), Crumblin' Down (#9) and the album reaching #9, and netting him his first headlining tour. He also joined with Wille Nelson and Neil Young to farm Farm Aid, an effort to bring notice to the american farmer.

Worst Track - Lovin' Mother Fo Ya

Best Track - Pink Houses

There's a black man with a black cat livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard
You know he thinks that he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen cleanin' up the evenin' slop
And he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin', I can remember when
you could stop a clock."

Oh but ain't that America for you and me
Ain't that America somethin' to see baby
Ain't that America home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

There's a young man in a t-shirt
Listenin' to a rockin' rollin' station
He's got greasy hair, greasy smile
He says, "Lord this must be my destination."
'Cause they told me when I was younger
"Boy you're gonna be president."
But just like everything else those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

Oh but ain't that America for you and me
Ain't that America somethin' to see baby
Ain't that America home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Well there's people and more people
What do they know know know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
Ooh yeah
And ther's winners and there's losers
But they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man baby pays for the thrills, the bills,
the pills that kill

Oh but ain't that America for you and me
Ain't that America somethin' to see baby
Ain't that America home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Jazz/Prog/Rock at it's best from the English lads formed in 1967 and certainly better than Winwood's solo work imo. And sorry, the loss of Dave Mason (twice) was not a big one. Although the bands earlier albums were more of a hit in the U.K., that success eventually transferred to the U.S. This album, their 7th studio effort, and the last before Winwoods exit, reached #9 in the U.S. and who needs singles anyway. The lengthy tracks eventually turned into jams but with the jazz overtones they were pleasant for me.

Worst Track - Love

Best Track - Walking In The Wind

You walk and talk and move around in circles
Your friends telling you you are doing fine
You can't see that snowball as it hurtles
Through the shattered membranes of your mind
If I could talk to you for just one minute
Then you would know what it is I am getting at
But there again your head's got nothing in it
By the way you left without your hat

I'm walking in the wind looking at the sky
Hanging on a breeze and wondering why, why
Your old man's headed for the final pay-off
The joker that you got is fading too
And all the sharks that come around for the rip-off
Are gonna tear the flesh right off you
The plastic princess hangs her head in wonder at the silver glittered boys
Trying, trying to compete
And all at once the room begins to thunder
And all that's left is the stain on the sheet

The prostitute is standing on the corner
Suffering so much pain to stay alive
She's so real, that life itself bows down before her
She couldn't make that nine to five
While the president is crying, crying in the White House
The prime minister's really got the blues
All the heads of state are busy playing cat & mouse
'Cause you can see none of them have ever paid their dues

God knows why, why, why
