RE: What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 13-01-2021

Favourite BJH albums are 'Gone to Earth' and 'Eyes of the Universe'.

Used to have 'Live Tapes' once upon a time - don't know where that one went to. I have about 3 or 4 other studio albums but I seldom listen to them.

What a gorgeous, lyrical album. Not entirely sure how I'd classify it - several styles here which is what makes it such a thoroughly enjoyable listen, IMHO. It's a little bit proggy, but lighter and more melodic (which doesn't mean it's any less worthy), and there is folk rock too, and even a little jazzy moment or two. Interested to note that Jerry Donahue of Fairport Convention and Fotheringay appears here, briefly. This was released in 2014, and is the album prior to 2020's The Life of the Honeybee & Other Moments of Clarity. I'm going backwards again. Lol! Next up Shooting Albatross - the latter two are quite some benchmarks so will be interesting to hear what they got up to before a bit of a shift in the personnel line-up. Definitely going to purchase this, and the honeybee.

"Obsolescence Pt 1 - Sunrise" ...

Stunning album cover. I like simple images. Less is more. Which reminds me of this

Simple Simon met a Pieman going to the fair
Said Simple Simon to the Pieman
What have you got there?

Pies, you idiot...!

Nice music BTW - must investigate more.

Rick Wakeman - Live at Hammersmith - one of his better live efforts.

Just chilling with this at the moment - stunning stuff - https://youtu.be/hFL4GS0Sn7Q

One of the comments on the YT page which made me laugh - 'If this is not played at my funeral, I am not going.'

^Lol!

Kerrs Pink - The Art of Complex Simplicity - already waxed lyrical about this album somewhere in this thread so won't bore anyone by repeating myself. Very happy to have this CD. Also keeping it brief as the prince of darkness has reappeared and we are about to go into loadshedding ... the fun never ends  Rolleyes ...

RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 24-01-2021

Today was Shawn Phillips day. I listened to Faces, Second Contribution and Rumplestiltskin's Resolve. Long time since I listened to Second Contribution in its entirety - conjured up a few memories - not least attending a concert of his. Also ended up noticing his bass players! And the pianist here - Peter Robinson. Serendipitously, Paul Buckmaster (who I just mentioned in the BOTD thread) also played for him quite a lot, so my track of choice for this post simply had to be ...

... and finally wrapping up this particular Shawn odyssey with Transcendence ...

RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-01-2021

i should invest in some more Shawn Phillips, only have one at this time.

^Which one do you have?

I'm listening to Jon Anderson's 1000 Hands (Chapter One)

Wow. The album is so called for the number of guest performers - took a while to all come together - it's a collection of recordings that were begun in 1990 for another project that was shelved due to Jon Anderson's Yes commitments, and there the master tapes sat, for nearly 30 years. You'll hear Chris Squire here, for example, who is no longer with us. Completely missed this for some reason! I like it.  Smile

Check out the line-up on "Activate" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWuGSVutp4w
Acoustic Guitar – Larry Coryell
Drums – Alan White
Electric Bass – Chris Squire
Electric Guitar – Pat Travers, Steve Morse
Electric Violin – Robby Steinhardt
Flute – Ian Anderson

Equally impressive on "1000 (Hands Come Up)" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfSK6c6jUxo
Bass Guitar – Chris Squire, Stuart Hamm
Drums – Billy Cobham
Guitar – Larry Coryell
Keyboards – Jonathan Cain
Piano – Chick Corea
Violin, Soloist – Jean-Luc Ponty

I was struck by the violin particularly, as well as the harpsichord on this one - Olga Kopakova and Michael Franklin respectively ... "Twice in a Lifetime" ...
