GEORGE HARRISON "all things must pass"  cd/vinyl 1970

my third George vinyl play for the day.
his third.
a highly ambitious album even for a Beatle, being a triple vinyl set especially when the Beatles never contemplated releasing a triple set and they had Lennon/McCartney in the band.
one Dylan cover and one co-written with Dylan here.
some folk, a hint of country with slide guitar, some rock/pop, someIndian influenced tracks and several instrumentals.
the experts all say this is the best solo album by any Beatle, i disagree.
yes, i think George is a fantastic guitarist and a good writer, but average singer.
twenty three tracks spread over six sides, some good, some bad and a handful of great tracks IMO.
not his best album by a long shot but yet again, another adventurous outing from Mr Harrison.
an all-star cast here: Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Dave Mason, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Peter Frampton and Gary Brooker to name a few.
i was never a fan of Spector's "wall of sound" and his co-production impedes this album IMO.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

GEORGE HARRISON "extra texture: read all about it!" vinyl/cd  1975

his sixth.
more rock orientated than previous albums.
Leon Russel/Billy Preston on keys, Ringo on drums, Dave Stewart (future Eurythmics) on guitar etc...
struggling to say anything positive about this album other than the Sax work.
a compressed stifled sounding album.
liking only three or four on here, a big letdown after two very good albums
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

lead off single (and best track):

I, I
Love, love
And I, and I
I love you
Oh you, you, yeah you.

And you, you,
Love, love
And you, yes you,
You love me
Yeah you, you, yeah you.

And when I'm holding you
What a feeling
Seems so good to be true
That I'm telling you all
That I must be dreaming.

And I, and I, I love you
Oh you, oh you, yeah you.

And when I'm holding you
What a feeling
Seems so good to be true
That I'm telling you all
That I must be dreaming.

Now I, oh I, I love, love
And I, yeah I, I love you, I love you
Oh you, you, oh you.

Oh, you know that I love you, oh oh oh
Oh, you know that I love you

GEORGE HARRISON "somewhere in England" vinyl, 1981

his nineth solo album.
5:45am listen.
a turbulent time for George, troubles with Warner Records rejecting the album and John's death.
his temultuous relationship with Paul was put aside whilst the three surving Beatles worked together on the Lennon tribute "all those years ago" track.
his most eclectic album IMO, contains rock, pop, protest songs, spiritual, acousitc and two blues covers.
was my first Harrison album back in the day, loved it then and to this day...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

the song he wrote about dissatisfaction with the music industry, some of these lyrics ring true to this day:
image in the link was supposed to be the original album cover but was rejected by Warner Bros.

They say they like it, now, but in the market it
May not go well as it's too laid back.
You need some oomph-papa, nothing like
Frank Zappa
And not New Wave they don't play that crap

Tyr beating your head on a brick wall
Hard like a stone
Don't have time for the music
They want the blood from a clone

I hear a clock ticking
I feel the nitpicking
I almost quit kicking at the wall
There seems a confusion, under the illusion
That they know just what will suit you all

Beating my head on a brick wall
Hard like a stone
Ain't got time for the music
They want the blood from a clone

There is no sense to it
Pure pounds and pence to it
They're so intense too makes me amazed
Don't want no music but, they're making you
sick with
Some awful noises that may get played

By beating their heads on a brick wall
Hard like a stone
Ain't no messing 'round with music
Give them the blood from a clone

Where will it all lead us
I thought we had freed us
From the mundane seems I'm wrong again
Could be they lack roots, they're still wearing
jack boots they're
Marching somewhere in the pouring rain

Beating my head on a brick wall
Hard like a stone
Don't have time for the music
They want the blood from a clone

FAIRPORT CONVENTION – Fame and Glory

This is a collection of songs written by French folk rock/rock opera composer Alan Simon and performed by Fairport Convention (and himself) as well as other guests including Martin Barre, Jacqui McShee, Didier Lockwood, Andreas Vollenweider and John Helliwell.

Having said before that I’m not a big fan of the rock opera, I’m finding myself quite enjoying this album – not the first time I’ll be eating my words! Or perhaps it's because it's excerpts from various of them. May need to seek out the actual works and take a listen. Simon first found fame with his Excalibur and Fairport Convention are a great fit for his subject matter, generally – legendary tales of myth and yore sort of thing. Mr Simon’s particular brand of music is referred to as Breton Celticism.

Didier Lockwood lets rip on this one – sung by Jacqui McShee - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq1clF_lESk

“La Guerre Folle” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfHPHLE-3V4

“Sacrifice” with Vollenweider and Jacqui McShee – a golden voice …

GEORGE HARRISON "live in Japan" vinyl  1992

George hadnt performed live since 1974.
BFF Eric Clapton convinced him to tour Japan with him in 1991 where he played half a dozen shows during December of the year.
no band needed, Clapton offered himself and his band for back up.
this double vinyl set is a nineteen track career spanning set including seven Beatle tracks, a Chuck Berry cover and eleven solo tracks.
a very good album with some of the tracks being superior in quality to the original studio versions.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

ZOMBIES "odessey & oracle" cd, 1968.

their second.
a rock masterpiece IMO, up there with Ogden's Nut Gone Flake for me.
baroque pop, chamber pop, psychedelic pop etc...
contains the classic single "time of the season" which i love but theres at least ah handful of others on here which i prefer.
loving just about everything on this album, as i said, its a masterpiece.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

thought i'd pick this one on this occasion:
