Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 24-11-2013

#313 - Jam - That's Entertainment - 1980

running recap for me - 3's=107, 2's=68, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Sound Affects
Written by Paul Weller
Produced by Jam, Vic Coppersmith
Chart action: #21 UK, #50 Australia

the players:
Paul Weller – guitar, vocals
Bruce Foxton - bass, backing vocals
Rick Buckler - drums

Do not recall hearing this before now. It was not released as a single here. Dare I say it, I think the Jam were too British to have much of an
impact here. A little confused, as wiki says it was released as an import single in the UK. An import from where? Surprised to see it is
considered to be one of the groups most well known songs. Shows how familiar I am with the bands work I guess, only having heard This Is The
Modern World.

Lyrics

A police car and a screaming siren
Pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
A baby wailing, a stray dog howling
The screech of brakes and lamplights blinking

That’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

A smash of glass and the rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tom cat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls

I say that’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Days of speed and slow time Mondays
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday
Watching the news and not eating your tea
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls

I say that’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol
An amateur band rehearse in a nearby yard
Watching the telly and thinking 'bout your holidays

That’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
A hot summers day and sticky black tarmac
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away

That’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude
Getting a cab and travelling on buses
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs

I say that’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

^ I never heard this one before either!!! I am 100% positive Crazy mate has! I like the song, also very smart lyrics! Very good sound from only a trio!!!

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 24-11-2013

*** from me, in Weller's top5 tracks of all time for me...

the song was released as a single in Australia and Germany, but surprisingly not the UK...

english fans bought copies on 'import' order from record stores....so large were he sales via Germany that it had to be included in the singles chart lists in the UK...

Jam had another single that was only available in europe in 1982..."just who is the 5 o'clock here", that too sold enough copies on import to make the UK singles chart also...

"thats entertainment" still holds the record for the "biggest selling imported record" in the UK, which shows just how massive The Jam actually were.

"thats entertainment" history...

Paul Weller said in 1982: "i wrote this one after coming home from the pub pissed/drunk one night...the song originally had some fifteen verses bit i trimmed it back to a three minute song"

Music Head Quote:

Shows how familiar I am with the bands work I guess, only having heard This Is The Modern World.....Un-qoute.

other than Style Council's "the cost of loving" and Paul Weller's "sonik kicks" albums, "this is the modern world" rounds off his worst three albums since 1977 IMO...

you need to hear:

"all mod cons" to hear the 'real' sound of The Jam mate

#312 - James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud - 1968

running recap for me - 3's=107, 2's=69, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud
Written by James Brown, Pee Wee Ellis
Produced by James Brown
Chart action: #10 US

the players:
James Brown – vocals
The Famous Flames

In the smoke filled trails of the civil rights movement this black power anthem surfaced, giving those that felt oppressed some steam. Brown
felt that the song cost him some fans and dropped it from his concerts after noticing a sharp drop in white attendance. He never regretted the
fact that it gave his black fan base a sense of pride. Interesting to read that the childrens choir was composed of mostly whites and asians.

Lyrics

Uh, with your bad self
Say it louder (I got a mouth)
Say it louder (I got a mouth)

Look a'here, some people say we got a lot of malice
Some say it's a lotta nerve
I say we won't quit moving
Til we get what we deserve
We've been buked and we've been scourned
We've been treated bad, talked about
As just as sure as you're born
But just as sure as it take
Two eyes to make a pair, huh
Brother, we can't quit until we get our share

Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, one more time
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, huh

I've worked on jobs with my feet and my hands
But all the work I did was for the other man
And now we demands a chance
To do things for ourselves
we tired of beating our heads against the wall
And working for someone else

Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, oowee

Ooowee, ou're killing me
Alright uh, you're out of sight
Alright, so tough, you're tough enough
Ooowee uh, you're killing me, oow

Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud

Now we demand a chance to do things for ourselves
We tired of beating our heads against the wall
And working for someone else
A look a'here,
One thing more I got to say right here
Now, we're people like the birds and the bees
We rather die on our feet,
Than keep living on our knees

Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, hu
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, hu
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, Lord'a Lord'a Lord'a
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, ooooh

Uh, alright now, good Lord
You know we can do the boog-a-loo
Now we can say we do the Funky Broadway!
Now we can do, hu
Sometimes we dance, we sing and we talk
You know I do like to do the camel walk
Alright now, hu alright,
Alright now, ha

Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud, let me hear ya
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud

Now we's demands a chance to do things for ourselves
We're tired of beating our heads against the wall
And working for someone else, hu
Now we're our people, too
We're like the birds and the bees,
But we'd rather die on our feet,
Than keep a'living on our knees

Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud, let me hear ha', huh
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, hu
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud

Oooow, oowee, you're killing me, alright
Uh, outa sight, alright you're outa sight
Ooowee, oh Lord,
Ooowee, you're killing me
Ooowee, ooowee, ooowee, ooowee, ow

Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud, hu
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud , Lord I feel it
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Say it louder,
I'm black and I'm proud

#311 - Beatles - With A Little Help From My Friends - 1967

running recap for me - 3's=108, 2's=69, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Written by John Lennon, Paul McCartney
Produced by George Martin
Chart action: non single

the players:
Ringo Starr – lead vocal, drums, tambourine
Paul McCartney – backing vocal, bass, piano
John Lennon – backing vocal, cowbell
George Harrison – backing vocal, lead guitar
George Martin – organ

Anyone remember this one? Didn't know this wasn't a single. That's the thing with Beatles songs, about 90% of them could have been singles. Has
to be one of Ringos best vocal performances. He actually sounds in tune. The song was written for him. It was first called Bad Finger Boogie
supposedly because Lennon composed the melody on a piano using his middle finger after having hurt his forefinger, which is where the band
Badfinger picked up the name. Starr insisted on changing the first line which originally was "What would you think if I sang out of tune? Would
you throw ripe tomatoes at me?" He changed the lyric so that fans would not throw tomatoes at him should he perform it live. The guys not as
dumb as we thought.

Lyrics

What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm,I get high with a little help from my friends,
Mmm, I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends.

What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)
No, I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm, get high with a little help from my friends,
Mmm, gonna to try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody?
I need somebody to love.
Could it be anybody?
I want somebody to love.

Would you believe in a love at first sight?
Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time.
What do you see when you turn out the light?
I can't tell you, but I know it's mine.
Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh, I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody?
I just need someone to love.
Could it be anybody?
I want somebody to love

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mmm, gonna try with a little help from my friends
Ooh, I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends,
with a little help from my friends
