Joni Mitchell was born on this day in 1943, in Alberta Canada. She calls herself ‘a painter derailed by circumstance’ and nowadays focuses on her art which she does not sell and only rarely exhibits. She retired from recording after her final album was released in 2007 and has scant regard for the music industry as it presently is, referring to it as a cesspool. I’m sure she is not alone.

There is a divide amongst members here about her much lauded album, Blue. Personally, I believe it is truly inspired and quite beautiful, but I don’t listen to it often because I find its rawness and vulnerability quite hard to take on all in one go; it’s a very emotional journey which makes perfect sense when you understand the circumstances behind its creation. Here’s the title track from that album …. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5782PQO5is

Whatever anyone’s opinion, musically, this lady has been a giant and an innovator, and it seems she went out on a high note – (well, maybe not high - her voice has definitely descended to the lower registers – naturally, as it would!) “If I Had a Heart” from 2007’s Shine –

For fun – here’s a live cover by Marillion (with Steve Hogarth), complete with what sounds suspiciously like the James Bond theme sneaking in there! Do you hear that??!

Larry Burnett was born on this day in 1951. One of the original members of Firefall – he played on their first five albums before leaving them rather suddenly in 1981, to enter rehab. As it turned out, the band never really got much together after that, in any event.

He finally returned to music in around 2004. He is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who penned a good few of Firefall’s better known numbers. I have discovered that on the whole, I prefer the tracks Rick Roberts wrote for them, so, while he was very definitely a part of the band at this stage, both on vocals and guitar, this one was not authored by Burnett –
