^^

and for those who don't know, there was actually a Japanese soldier from WWII who was stranded/left on an island till 1974 who had no idea the war was over.

RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 07-06-2020

Stumbled upon a melodic prog band called Fluance, in this instance ft Duncan Mackay, who released an album in February this year - Lunacy. Had no idea Mr Mackay had done anything like this - he doesn't seem to get a whole lot of publicity for some reason - actually, on second thoughts, not that hugely surprising - he's a bit of a recluse. And the CD is only available from Japan ... oh well ...

This is from their website - https://www.noochoon.com/music/fluance/fluance.htm

"Lunacy is an album of melodic Prog Rock music, very much reminiscent of Pink Floyd. It has been recorded using the instrumentation and production techniques available in the 1970's in the heyday of the Prog Rock genre. It also features a "genuine article in the guise of Duncan Mackay, famous for his work with The Alan Parsons Project, Camel, Budgie, 10CC, Kate Bush and Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. Also, most notably Marty Prior from Cockney Rebel and Barry James Thomas from Sad Cafe and his work with Phil Lynott.

The songs are written by Philip Lane and Jane Lane and Philip has recorded, produced and mixed the album at the Beehouse Recording Studios in Llanfyllin, Wales. Organ and piano parts were also recorded by Duncan and Mick Evans at Melpro Studios in Cape Town and Bass and Barry's lead guitar on "Hanging Out" were recorded in Spain.

The album is a concept album and is best listened to in the order intended ..."

Ignoring the above instruction for the purposes of this post - here's the first track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiFsYEg2N_o, and the last, borrowing heavily from "The Great Gig in the Sky" (in the second half of the song especially) but also sounding oh so very Camelish - I like that voice ...

RE: What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 07-06-2020

Ruby, am I correct in saying that you know Duncan?

RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 08-06-2020

^Yes Jerome - as an acquaintance - bump into him now and then at the local supermarket - that kind of thing. He lives close by - has a studio at his house which I last saw when he was still building it. A very private person.

I'm listening to Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds as a result of hearing "Forever Autumn" on the radio - gorgeous song. Haven't actually sat and listened to this in its entirety for some time. I was completely enthralled hearing it for the first time, at least a hundred years ago. So many lifetimes in one - it's weird. Anyway - what a marvelous album. Absolutely superb - somehow fitting for these strange times. Richard Burton was brilliant - it's all fantastic. What a pleasure ...

fantastic album Ruby.
Richard Burton makes takes the whole thing to another level altogether.

^Yes - great narration.

Today I felt like something a bit more rumbunctious than usual so it was Fischer-Z - Red Skies Over Paradise. Funny how some things just stay with you ...

RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 11-06-2020

Thought I'd give a character by the name of Ozymandias Carter a listen - irresistible name! He recently released an album (independently published) which I have not heard in it's entirety because it's not all available - The Vanishing Crowd. Strange fella this - he sounds like a cross between Bob Dylan and Rodriguez and says of himself "My voice is raw, my guitar is out of tune and I bang on the keyboard like a monkey, but I think the songs come through which was the whole point in the first place."

Listened to the four songs that I found, from his new album - looks as though he's made three altogether, in quick succession, since 2019. The songs all got a bit samey and the novelty wore off quickly - terrible quality tbh, lol! Good for him though - he obviously needed to get things off his chest. And there is some merit in his words.

I used to frequent a bar with a mate of mine in Newlands, Cape Town. Anthony used to chase the women and I used to listen to the band. A duo (can't remember their name). Cruise Missiles was regularly performed, and I have to, say better than the original. Their other classic cover was 96 Degrees in the Shade. Fantastic band.

RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 13-06-2020

^I recall a few Newlands haunts. Another lifetime.

Lee Clayton ... his Border Affair has been re-released but isn't anywhere to be found for listening aside from a few crappy live clips which really don't do him justice - mind you, none of these are that great soundwise. I have Naked Child which I found by mistake many moons ago and which is his tour de force IMHO - probably ranks as one of my favourite albums ever. I also have The Dream Goes On which while not at all shabby isn't quite as appealing as Naked Child - mysterious to me that he didn't get more attention ... I could pick any song from Naked Child ...

always loved "I Ride Alone" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsanF9wZbn8

"10,000 Years / Sexual Moon" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LxFSo3r3do

GEORGE HARRISON "extra texture (read all about it)" vinyl/cd 1975

his sixth studio album
played the cd, not the vinyl from the boxset.
never really a fan of this album.
I don't like saying negative things about George because he always seems to have good intentions,
also happens to be the only Beatle who remained grounded and normal (and all round nice guy) but here goes....
dude sounds uninspired and the album is uninspiring,
sounds like a 'nowhere man living in his nowhere land and making all his nowhere plans for nobody'...
this album shows to me exactly why he was generally only given one track per Beatle album,
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

the single (and best of an average bunch)
