my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 23-12-2013

THE SELECTOR "three minute hero" b/w "james bond" 1980

the second of five discs in that ska "beat-box" boxset...
ive never liked these guys at all.
"a" side is their usual uninspired crap...
"b" side is a bit more interesting...a lot of those UK ska band covered songs that you wouldnt expect..."bad Manners" did "can can","my girl lollipop", Specials did "guns of naverone","magnificent seven" themes, and these guys covered the "james bond" theme...

THE BEAT "hands off...shes mine" b/w "twist and crawl" 1980

known as 'the english beat' in the US...
these morphed into "general public" and "fine young cannibals" when they split up...
im a huge fan of these guys' singles, after Madness they are my favourite ska group from back then.
single failed to chart here

MADNESS "my girl" b/w "stepping into line" 1979

fourth single from the boxset and its Madness' second UK single...
this "a" side is a ballad, one of the band's best singles IMO...
"b" side is typical Madness "b" side crap!
single failed to chart here

THE SPECIALS "a message to you rudy" b/w "niteclub" 1979

the last single from my boxset of ska singles is a cover of an old reggae track...
i love this "a" side, ive heard the original a couple of times but i prefer this version...
"b" side is a track off their debut album, love that one also, infact, i love the album as a whole also
single did chart here reaching #29, it did however peak at #1 in the UK

THE STYLE COUNCIL "the lodgers-ep" 1985

this was a double vinyl set...
lead off track was a re-recording of the song of the same name from their "our favourite shop" album...
i much prefer this version!,
"b" side is a track that was originally an "a" side in "big boss groove"
second disc contains two live tracks in "youre the best thing" and "long hot summer"
single failed to chart here but did peak at #13 in the UK

THE STYLE COUNCIL "the lodgers-ep" 1985 12" version

12" single version of the 7" single...
"a" side contains the full extended version of the lead-off track, better than the single radio edit version! and "big boss groove" live...
"b" side contains live versions of Curtis Mayfield's "move on up"(its not bad but i prefer the Jam's version, and of course Mayfields!),
also contains the live version of "youre the best thing" and a medly of other songs entitled "money-go-round medley"
all-up, good value for any fan of Weller as it contains some 20+ minutes of live material!

CLIFF RICHARD & THE DRIFTERS "move it" b/w "schoolboy crush" 1958

part of a twelve disc vinyl boxset released in 1979 to celebrate 21yrs in the industry...
this was his first single release...
i dont like this side of this single, but he was the UK's first real rock and roller, so its pretty hard to knock the guy too much
"b" side is a bit better,but not much..LOL
oh yeh,
you might be wondering why this one is not by Cliff and the Shadows, well, the Shadows original name was The Drifters, but they changed it a couple of years after this because of another band with that name...
this single peaked at #100 here, but reached #2 on the UK charts

"b" side isnt too bad neither,it is incidently my Father's favourite Cliff song ever
single peaked at #9 here and actually reached #30 in the US
