Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 05-11-2013 #316 - Tina Turner - What's Love Got Do Do With It - 1984 running recap for me - 3's=106, 2's=66, 1's=10 this one - ** from the album: Private Dancer Written by Terry Britten, Graham Lyle Produced by Terry Britten Chart action: #1 US, #3 UK, #1 Australia, #1 Canada the players: Tina Turner â vocals other people playing things Hated this when it was out. Too much airplay, + the video. I can appreciate it for what it was now, a good pop song. Tina didn't care for the song when she first heard it (demo I guess). Producer Britten roughed it up for her, to her liking. It went on to be her first #1 record. It was the second single from her fifth solo album Private Dancer. The song was originally recorded by UK pop group Bucks Fizz but was not released at the time. Tinas hit would be the version inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame (didn't know there was such a thing) in 2012. It had netted her 3 Grammys in 1985. The song was written for Cliff Richard but he didn't want it, then Phyllis Hyman, then Donna Summer. Good thing Tina gave it a second look. It served her well. Lyrics You must understand That the touch of your hand Makes my pulse react That it's only the thrill Of boy meeting girl Opposites attract It's physical Only logical You must try to ignore That it means more than that [Chorus:] Oh what's love got to do, got to do with it What's love but a second hand emotion What's love got to do, got to do with it Who needs a heart When a heart can be broken It may seem to you That I'm acting confused When you're close to me If I tend to look dazed I've read it someplace I've got cause to be There's a name for it There's a phrase that fits But whatever the reason You do it for me [Chorus] I've been taking on a new direction But I have to say I've been thinking about my own protection It scares me to feel this way [Chorus] What's love got to do, got to do with it What's love but a sweet old fashioned notion What's love got to do, got to do with it Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 05-11-2013 ** from me also, had the post have been for the title track from the album it would have got *** thanks for the info...was totally unaware Bucks Fizz recorded this one first...(not that i liked them anyway!) Looking Back At Some Classics - TraceNspace - 06-11-2013 Glad it ended up in Tina's lap
Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 06-11-2013 Love Tina and the song!!!! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 10-11-2013 #315 - Jackie Wilson - Lonely Teardrops - 1958 running recap for me - 3's=107, 2's=66, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: various compilations Written by Berry Gordy, Gwen Gordy, Tyran Carlo Produced by Dick Jacobs Chart action: #7 US the players: Jackie Wilson â vocals other people playing things One of Berry Gordy's first hits and he went to the top of the industry. Said to have founded Motown from the profits off this record. Jackie Wilson was one of the rungs on the ladder to Berry's success. Jackie collapsed on stage with a heart attack while singing this song in 1975, right at the line "my heart is crying". That's what it says people, I can't make this stuff up. It was at one of those Dick Clark Rock & Roll Review shows. American Bandstand was Jackies first tv appearance and where the clip is from. Jackie was in a coma for 10 years after that heart attack, dying in 1984. Song is in the Grammy HOF and Jackie was inducted into the R&R HOF in 1987. Lonely teardrops Come home, come home Just say you will, say you will, say you will Say you will, say you will Hey hey, say you will Say it right now baby, say you will Come on, come on, say you will Say it darling yeah, say you will Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 10-11-2013 im a big fan of Jackie Wilson and i love this song so................*** Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 11-11-2013 Classic song! love it! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 18-11-2013 #314 - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall In Love - 1956 running recap for me - 3's=107, 2's=67, 1's=10 this one - ** from the album: various compilations Written by Frankie Lymon, Morris Levy Produced by George Goldner Chart action: #6 US, #1 UK the players: Frankie Lymon â lead vocals Herman Santiago - backing vocals Jimmy Merchant - backing vocals Sherman Garnes - backing vocals Joe Negroni - backing vocals ![]() The doo-wop era strikes again. Not a big fan of this one, but it was ok. Written by the Harlem kid when he was 13. Morris Levy took all the credit and the money. A court battle in 1992 awarded original members Herman Santiago and Jimmy Merchant with credit in the writing of the song. That decision was overturned in 1996 reverting back to Frankie and Morris. The lawyers must have had fun with this one. The song got a resurgence in 1973 after appearing in the film American Grafitti. Didn't help Frankie any. He died of a heroin overdose at the age of 25. Lyrics Why do fools fall in love? Why do birds sing so gay? And lovers await the break of day Why do they fall in love? (Fools fall in love) Why does the rain fall from up above? Why do fools fall in love? Why do they fall in love? (Fools fall in love) Love is a losing game Love can be a shame I know of a fool you see, for that fool is me Tell me why, tell my why? Why do birds sing so gay? And lovers await the break of day Why do they fall in love? (Fools fall in love) Why does the rain fall from up above? Why do fools fall in love? Why do they fall in love? (Fools fall in love) Why does my heart skip this crazy beat? For I know, it will reach defeat Tell me why, tell me why? Why do fools fall in love? Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 18-11-2013 Not bad but not one I would gravitate to! Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 18-11-2013 ** from me also, much prefer Diana Ross' version from the mid 1980s |
