What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 04-01-2012 ABBEY LINCOLN - Abbey Sings Abbey (2007) ![]() Abbey Lincoln was a unique jazz vocalist in that she wrote very good songs and sang them herself rather than relying on covers by other artists ! Her voice is somewhat reminiscent of Billie Holiday,,in fact she released an album Abbey Sings Billie. This album demonstrates Abbey's unique vocal talent and song writing. Unfortunately she passed away last year but left behing her a legacy of one of the foremost female jazz singers in history. What Are You Listening To? - mtthwibrahim - 04-01-2012 Alabama Feeling-Arthur Doyle crazy free jazz lo fi, naturally awesome What Are You Listening To? - mtthwibrahim - 07-01-2012 Esoteric Circle-Jan Garbarek A recommendation from SteveO. I suppose this would be classified as avant garde jazz, I like what I've heard so far a lot What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 08-01-2012 I am very glad you like it...so far, Matt !!!! mtthwibrahim Wrote:Esoteric Circle-Jan Garbarek What Are You Listening To? - mtthwibrahim - 13-01-2012 Let My Children Hear Music-Charles Mingus This album is just incredible. I always liked it, but listening to it again, I love it now. This is the most avant garde territory Mingus would ever explore (at least to my knowledge it is) and very similar in sound his "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" (favorite album ever btw) What Are You Listening To? - danielkr94 - 13-01-2012 I'm listening to my man Buddy guy - sweet tea, some of the dirtiest sounding blues he's ever played ![]()
What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 15-01-2012 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Another set in the Time-Life Big Band series. Always amazed that music this old is obtainable. All of these 21 tracks are from 1938-1941, which was Artie Shaw's peak period. On researching these artists, I find it funny that popular music even then was so fleeting. You had to get it while you could, because tomorrow something else may come along. Sure, these guys were around for a long time, but their popularity never maintained it's original level. Artie was was born in the big apple in 1910 and died in 2004. He never intended to be a musician. A published author was his goal. He finaly achieved that after retiring from music in 1954. Learned to play the saxaphone at age 13, switched to clarinet at sixteen, then joined a band and left home. It was the mid 30's before Artie got his own group together and hit the big time shortly after with Begin The Beguine. Some of the names in his bands through the years, Ray Conniff, Buddy Rich, Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest, Mel Torme. Only three vocal tracks on this album, which doesn't keep me from loving it. I have a fascination with this era of music and I'm not sure why, but no I wasn't there.
