JOHNNY CASH "johnny cash at san quentin:the complete 1969 concert" cd,1969

history lesson:
1967,Cash finally got off the hard drugs and booze that had haunted/hampered his career through the 1960s,he went to Folsom Prison for the umpteenth time to perform where he recorded a live album...it was a massive hit...
1968Cash married longtime lover June Carter...
1969Cash returned to San Quentin(california's notorious maximum security pen) and recorded a follow up to the Folsom Prison album...and his career was resurrected again

this album has to rate as one of the best live albums ever recorded, you can feel the tension in the recording, along with the electricity that was in the air that night...
Cash, banters with the 200+ murderers, sex offenders and death row inmates...he jokes about prison life, the food, the water, the conditions, and takes off the cufff requests from the inmates for over an hour...those guys were eating out of his hands for the duration and even probably forgot they were in prison for that short while...
Cash sings numerous songs from his back catalogue along with some new ones never before sung...he wrote the song "san quentin" the night before the performance, and such was the response from the captive audience(pardon the pun) he sung it again much to the dismay of the Warden!
another one, "wanted man" was written with Bob Dylan earlier that week and details the story of a man on the 'lam'...
"i dont know where im bound" was apoem written by an inmate there and he put music and a tune to it that day for inclusion into the show...
but the most famous of the new songs was "a boy named sue", which he also learned the night before the show, this one has the inmates in raptures...i guess they could see the funny side of such a song....
all up, a brilliant live set, one that every serious music fan should own...this is Johnny Cash at his best IMO...2.8 or 9/10

  1. "Girl from the North Country" (with Johnny Cash) – 3:41
  2. "Nashville Skyline Rag" – 3:12
  3. "To Be Alone with You" – 2:07
  4. "I Threw It All Away" – 2:23
  5. "Peggy Day" – 2:01
Side two
  1. "Lay Lady Lay" – 3:18

  3. "Tell Me That It Isn't True" – 2:41

  5. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" – 3:23

I'm certain this album has been reviewed in depth by either MH or CH ! The previous mention of the Dylan/Cash collaboration on Wanted Man...inspired me to haul out an old forgotten gem ! Girl from the North Country featuring Johnny Cash *****...is the highlight for me...so raw and down to earth !!!! !!!!!..I Threw It All Away, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You and Lay Lady Lay are standouts also. I love this album !.....27 minutes goes by fast !

From the new stack. Found out I had volume 2 of this, so I had to fill it in. Of course with
JC, you could have 20 volumes. Tracks here are from the earliest Sun days through the Rubin
stuff. Released about the time of the Walk The Line film, so that made it a huge success. An
even split between the likes and loves for me, with one track of a U2 song which don't cut it
at all. I was never on board with the Rubin material as most were. Just don't like the fact
that he left his roots. I'm glad for Johnny, as it boosted his then failing career. but I much
prefer the old Johnny. I make an exception for the Hurt track, love it. Gotta go back to Ring
Of Fire for my favorite.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

nice collection MH, difficult to span an entire career with 21 songs????

Man In Black would probably be my favourite JC track ever, but Ring Of Fire isnt far off it neither, and Hurt....great,great cover of the Nine Inch Nails one(which i dont like much!)

What Are You Listening To? - Lovely Linda - 24-06-2013

Anybody like Jamey Johnson? I saw him a few years back with Willie Nelson. Jamey is one of my fave newcomers, if I can call him that now. Like High Cost Of Living and Redneck Side Of Me especially. He sings like the oldies Confusedmile: Jamey and Randy Houser wrote Honky Tonk Badonkadonk

THE DECEMBERISTS "the king is dead" cd, 2011

the decemberists sisth album of uptempo country/folk material...
another in-store promo copy that Corey gave me...
real "americana" feel happening here, lots of R.E.M type sounds also which isnt a huge surprise as a couple of those guys appaer on here as guest musicians...
album reached #1 in the US, i cant find anywhere else that it charted, but im sure i probably did at some point with the ressurgance of folky sounds that are so popular
on the charts right now...
a very very good album IMO and one i would have purchased for sure had i heard it prior to the generousity of Corey

Shows Johnny having 11 gospel albums of which I only have A Believer Sings The Truth, so this
was a welcome addition, from the new stack. Purchased in January, played in June. Songs run
from 57-81, with a few not released before. The real early ones are with the Tennessee Two, so
the music has that rock-a-billy sound Johnny started with. Some are traditional and some Johnny
penned. Nothing I don't like and the least favorite is only that because it's one of those
spoken story things. Favorite is the more secular Daddy Sang Bass. Don't think this holds up as
well as the Elvis or George gospel sets, but it still sneaks in to the love score.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 01-07-2013

i dont own this one but knoe most of the songs...would probably get around the same score from me....pretty difficult to go passed Elvis Presley doing Gospel IMO, with George a close second...

The Great Speckled Bird would come very close as my favourite off this one if i posted it

PATSY CLINE "dreaming:16 original greats" cd

Dani and I are staying at her mum's house until we find a houseof our own...
i went through her collection the other day and picked out this one to play...
ive always loved Patsy's vocals, tones and quality...
in her short career she released three studio albums and thirty five singles, then one day in 1960ish the plane she was travelling in crashed and took young Cline from us, she was at the peak of her career when this happened and we will never find out just how great an artist she would have become had she not boarded that flight on that fateful day...
a great vocalist with the world at her feet...but at least we still have the music to play!
it would be so easy to pick "i fall to pieces" or "crazy" as my favourite track here but im going for something a little different this time round in "she's got you", whenever i hear this track i always wonder how it would have sounded if Elvis Presley got his hands on it as apart from a few subtle lyrical changes this song was made for him IMO.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

1. i fall to pieces ***
