Looking Back At Some Classics - TraceNspace - 19-10-2012 This is probably my favorite song by The Cure and I love them. I never get sick of this song. I think it's so pretty. Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 20-10-2012 Definitely a rock classic! Music Head Wrote:#489 - Drifters - Under The Boardwalk - 1964 Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 21-10-2012 #487 - Alice Cooper - I'm Eighteen - 1970 running recap for me - 3's=9, 2's=4, 1's=1 this one - *** from the album: Love It To Death Written by the band Produced by Bob Ezrin, Jack Richardson Chart action: #21 Billboard Hot 100 the band: Vincent Furnier (vocals, harmonica) Glen Buxton (lead guitar) Michael Bruce (rhythm guitar & keyboards) Dennis Dunaway (bass) Neal Smith (drums) Thought it would have charted higher, but that's respectable. It is the song I think, that broke him to the mainstream. Interesting that Johnny Rotten used this song to audition for the Sex Pistols. The groups third album with much credit given to Bob Ezrin for the success. He would hook up with them for many more. Love the black and white white album cover, but even that brought controversy. Vincent had his finger sticking out of his fly making it appear as if it was something else. Warner Brothers air brushed that out after the initial release. Give me a break people, it's a finger. I do have one complaint about this song. It was recorded in 1970, and Vincent was born in 1948, making him 22 at the time. He clearly lied about his age. Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 21-10-2012 I'm Eighteen in 1971 I WAS 18 and in Montreal. Bought the single and put it in my duffle bag where it was smashed later on somehow? I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 22-10-2012 #486 - David Bowie - Young Americans - 1975 running recap for me - 3's=10, 2's=4, 1's=1 this one - *** from the album: Young Americans Written by David Bowie Produced by Tony Visconti Chart action: #28 US, #18 UK, #33 Canada, #27 Australia the players: David Bowie – vocals, guitar Willie Weeks – bass Mike Garson – piano Andy Newmark – drums David Sanborn – saxophone Pablo Rosario – percussion Larry Washington – congas Ava Cherry – backing vocals Robin Clark – backing vocals Luther Vandross – backing vocals Don't think I was real keen on this one when it came out. Didn't take long with that sax driving it. That was just killer stuff. Bowie says "It's about a newlywed couple who don't know if they really like each other". Only the writer could come up with that and I'll take his word for it. Ziggy was history as this ventured into that blue eyed soul category. Noted by the appearance of Luther Vandross who would go on to his own fame. Bowies first actual hit in the states with the song and the album. Recorded while still touring for the previous Diamond Dogs album, it would sit on the shelf for a brief spell. Lyrics They pulled in just behind the bridge He lays her down, he frowns "Gee my life's a funny thing, am I still too young?" He kissed her then and there She took his ring, took his babies It took him minutes, took her nowhere Heaven knows, she'd have taken anything, but All night She wants the young American Young American, young American, she wants the young American All right She wants the young American Scanning life through the picture windows She finds the slinky vagabond He coughs as he passes her Ford Mustang, but Heaven forbid, she'll take anything But the freak, and his type, all for nothing He misses a step and cuts his hand, but Showing nothing, he swoops like a song She cries "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?" All night She wants the young American Young American, young American, she wants the young American All right She wants the young American All the way from Washington Her bread-winner begs off the bathroom floor "We live for just these twenty years Do we have to die for the fifty more?" All night He wants the young American Young American, young American, he wants the young American All right He wants the young American Do you remember, your President Nixon? Do you remember, the bills you have to pay Or even yesterday? Have you been an un-American? Just you and your idol singing falsetto 'bout Leather, leather everywhere, and Not a myth left from the ghetto Well, well, well, would you carry a razor In case, just in case of depression Sit on your hands on a bus of survivors Blushing at all the Afro-Sheeners Ain't that close to love? Well, ain't that poster love? Well, it ain't that Barbie doll Her heart's been broken just like you have All night You want the young American Young American, young American, you want the young American All right You want the young American You ain't a pimp and you ain't a hustler A pimp's got a Cadi and a lady’s got a Chrysler Black's got respect, and white's got his soul train Mama's got cramps, and look at your hands shake I heard the news today, oh boy I got a suite and you got defeat Ain't there a man you can say no more? And, ain't there a woman I can sock on the jaw? And, ain't there a child I can hold without judging? Ain't there a pen that will write before they die? Ain't you proud that you struck our faces? Ain't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry? All night I want the young American Young American, young American, I want the young American All right I want the young American Young American Young American, young American, I want the young American (I want with you, I want with you want) All right (You want it, I want you you, you want I, I want you want) Young American, young American, I want the young American (I want to want, to want, to want , to want I, I want you) All right (Lord I wanted the young American) (young American) Young American, Young American I want the young American Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 23-10-2012 Fabulous song by a master artist! I thought this song would rate much higher? Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 23-10-2012 yep, brilliant track by 'the thin white duke', not a big fan of his albums overall, but as a singles artist he was sublime IMO Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 23-10-2012 #485 - LaBelle - Lady Marmalade - 1975 running recap for me - 3's=10, 2's=5, 1's=1 this one - ** from the album: Nightbirds Written by Bob Crewe, Kenny Nolan Produced by Alan Toussaint Chart action: #1 US, #17 UK, #1 Canada, #17 Australia the players: Patti Labelle - lead vocal Nona Hendryx - backing vocal Sarah Dash - backing vocal Meters - the music Was never a huge fan of this one. I think it was the french and the gitchi gitchi thing. I would just mumble anything and it made as much sense to me. Surprised to see Kenny Nolan as co-author, as anything I have heard by him was more of an easy listening jazz type of thing. And Bob Crewe was the man behind most of the Four Seasons hits. The music saves the song for me, with the Meters providing the funk that drives it. Just found out that the voulez- vous line translates into "do you want to sleep with me tonight". See, all this time I thought it was about sex, and now I find out it's about sleeping. I just love learning stuff. Lyrics Hey Sister, Go Sister, Soul Sister, Go Sister [x2] He met Marmalade down in Old New Orleans Struttin' her stuff on the street She said 'Hello, Hey Joe, you wanna give it a go? 'Mmm Hmmm Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya here Mocca chocolata Ya Ya Creole Lady Marmalade Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? He savored her cool While she freshed up That boy drank all that magnolia wine On the black satin sheets where He started to freak Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Here Mocca chocalata Ya Ya Creole Lady Marmalade Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? Heh, Heh, Hehhhh Seeing her skin feeling silky smooth Colour of cafe au lait Made the savage beast inside Roaring till it cried More, More, More Now he's at home doing 9 to 5 Living his brave life of lies But when he turns off to sleep All memories keep More, More, More Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Da Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya here Mocca chocolata Ya Ya Creole Lady Marmalade Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir? Creole Lady Marmalade Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 23-10-2012 good song, the cover that was released the other year was pretty good also |
