Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)

From "What's Going On", a great album by the late soul legend Mr. Marvin Gaye. Smile

I presume you refer to the album "What's Going On". It is indeed a great album, and he apparently had quite a struggle to get Motown to release it. I did not exactly fit their formula, but to many people's surprise it was hugely successful.

I fixed my post. And yes, it's that album I'm referring to. I don't get why Motown Records didn't want to release it and it's quite influential now.

It's easy to say that in retrospect.... but at the time it could have been seen as a risky venture. The music owed more to jazz fusion than to the sound Motown was associated with, typified by the Supremes, the Four Tops and Gaye's earlier hits. Moreover, the lyrics, instead of being about falling in and out of love, which was Motown's staple formula, instead dealt with important current social issues, which was supposed to be the domain of white male hippy folk-rock singers.

In the end they probably decided the Marvin Gaye name would generate the sales anyway, and fortunately that proved to be the case.

Yeah I think the politically conscious content could be one reason, might've been seen as too divisive for audiences, at the time. Although The Temptations were signed with Motown Records and did some political songs like Ball of Confusion too.

I see what you mean about the formula Motown Records preferred though and how the album diverged from it. I like the sound, personally.
