#321 - Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - 1979

running recap for me - 3's=103, 2's=64, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: The Wall
Written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters
Produced by Bob Ezrin
Chart action: did not chart

the players:
Roger Waters - vocal, bass
David Gilmour - vocal, guitar
Richard Wright - keyboards
Nick Mason - drums

Get chills from the brilliance of this work of art. Waters wrote this after a doctor injected him with
tranquilizers before a 1977 gig in Philadelphia when he was suffering from stomach cramps. "That was
the longest two hours of my life," Waters said. "Trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your
arm." Waters sings the verses and Gilmour the chorus and Gilmours guitar solo is spectacular as ever.
Probably my favorite album of all time.

Lyrics

Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb.

What can I say about Comfortably Numb! One of the top classics of our generation! Ranked as #321 is a complete travesty! What are they '''numb skulls"? Now it will be very interesting indeed to see what songs surpass Comfortably Numb !!!!

#320 - Screamin' Jay Hawkins - I Put A Spell On You - 1956

running recap for me - 3's=104, 2's=64, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Voodoo Jive
Written by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Herb Slotkin
Produced by Arnold Maxin
Chart action: did not chart

the players:
it's a secret

So many brilliant covers out there, but you gotta give credit to the original. CCR's is one of my favs.
Probably considered somewhat of a novelty song at the time. Surprised his version did not chart, but
made up for by those other versions. The clip for this one is from a live performance on the Merv
Griffin show in 1966 where Jay shows his craziness. Don't know that the guy has any more memorable
songs than this one. He passed away in 2000 but made his mark with this classic. Probably the first
shock rocker.

Lyrics

I put a spell on you
’cause you’re mine

stop the things you do
I ain’t lyin’

yeah, I can’t stand
whoa, no runnin’ around
I can’t stand
no puttin' me down

I put a spell on you
because you’re mine

stop the things you do
I ain’t lyin’

oh, no
I love you
I love you
I love you, anyhow
I don’t care if you don’t want me
I’m yours, right now

I put a spell on you
because you’re mine

#319 - Roy Orbison - In Dreams - 1963

running recap for me - 3's=105, 2's=64, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: In Dreams
Written by Roy Orbison, Joe Melson
Produced by Fred Foster
Chart action: #7 US, #6 UK, #7 Canada, #1 Australia

the players:
it's a secret

Quite a ways down on my Roy favorites list and I still love it. That voice is just amazing. This song
opened the door in the UK for Roy where it was an even bigger hit than it was here. A booking with an
up and coming group called the Beatles was the result. He was supposed to be the headliner, but
realizing the mop tops had taken over, he offered to open. The Beatles stood in the wings, wondering
how they would dare to follow him. After demanding Orbison play for double the time he was scheduled,
the audience then screamed for a fifteenth encore, which Lennon and McCartney refused to allow by
holding Orbison back from re-entering the stage.

Lyrics

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."

I close my eyes, Then I drift away
Into the magic night. I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do.
Then I fall asleep to dream My dreams of you.

In dreams I walk with you. In dreams I talk to you.
In dreams you're mine. All of the time we're together
In dreams, In dreams.

But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone.
I can't help it, I can't help it, if I cry.
I remember that you said goodbye.

It's too bad that all these things, Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams In beautiful dreams.
