okay mate let's have a go shall we
we all agree this is a problem in my country
what law(s) should be passed that you think would address the issue?
not what should we have done, but what should be done now
examine the implications of the laws you want to pass
and keep in mind we have to have the ability to actually enforce the laws that we pass

i think America is actually passed the 'point of no return',
guns/firearms(the right to bare arms) has been entrenched too deeply in the psychy of the American people to ever change or pass through the various stages of Government..
that's not the fault of the people, that's just the way you guys have evolved over the centuries.

the things that could possibly be thought about by your Legislative Powers could be things like(and im just throwing out ideas here)

1. restricting the amount of fireamrs that any one person could legally own
2. having a National database of people with mental illnesses so when they go to purchase a firearm it is declined.
3. only allowing future purchasers of firearms to purchase them if they need one for their job ie: farmers, law enforcement

back in 1996 Australia has its first real massacre in which almost forty people were killed and another twenty or so injured by a crazed gunman...

the Australian Government introduced measures to get firearms off the streets and out of the hands of people who don't really need them by:

1. offering a buy-back scheme for people to return firearms they don't use:
2. an amnesty whereby people could drop off unlicenced guns at police stations without the fear or prosecution(I think the period was around six months) anyone caught with unlicensed firearms after that period would feel the full weight of the law...
3. made it harder for people to obtain licences to purchase firearms unless they worked rural(farming), or needed them for their occupation.
4. if people didn't need them for 'point 3' they would have to supply references from farmers to say they could hunt on their properties, or they had to obtain referneces from gun clubs to say they were prospective memebers of the gunclub(if they didn't attend x amount of times to practice at the gun club per month, their licences were revoked)

those laws worked very well, but there will always be people who have unlicenced firearms or obtain illegal firearms everywhere...
but at least the Govt's actions were proactive.

here's a link for that massacre I mentioned previously: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)

like I said earlier:
the US is well and truly beyond the point of no return IMO.

just about everybody in the US from the President, through Law Enforcemnt and the civilian populous is disgusted and horrifies by these continual massacres that occur in workplaces, places of education, cinemas etc so why does no one demand action?

what do you see as being the obstacles that stop the Govt doing anything about gun reform?
why are people horrified yet fail to demand action from their elected members of Govt?

and where do you see where the system has failed the American people?

This is a tricky topic for Americans to deal with - there are many issues involved - but I do think the day has come to actually do something about this. This college campus/school killing 'fad' has to be dealt with. It's absolutely insane to think that one young guy can legally build up an arsenal of weapons and then go beserk on some campus. BTW, why is it always an educational institution? Are they easy targets? If so, the NRA will lobby for more kids to carry guns and the cycle will just continue - over and over and over.
And I don't care whether I am in the minority when I say this but the senseless violence portrayed in movies and video games has an awful lot to do with this. I remember when Mike Oldfield was trying to market an exploration game called 'Tres Luna' which was sold with the CD of the same name. It is an educational exploration with his music as accompaniment. When he finally got to meet one of the executives from a gaming company the first thing he was asked about the game was 'How do we kill something?' Go figure.....

Charlton Heston(yes the actor) used to be President of the NRMA,
whenever there was a massacre in the US he used to go to the town it happened in a week or so after tragedy struck and hold a rally telling the people
they need guns to protect themselves against these occurrences...

but, Obama is an idiot.
the only two things I believe he has tried to do to benefit the US is...
1...cheap healthcare(which obviously doesn't appear to be working as it should) and...
2...a President who finally has the balls to say something about all the massacres and senseless killings you guys have

I am surprised to hear you call Obama a idiot (not really)
but I did think you liked him.
I stand by my statement about guns! I do not want to put
myself in a place where I am defenseless against thugs.
If someone had a gun in that church or in the college
maybe they could have stopped the murders before
it got to that point.
We have to face the world as it is not what we would
like it to be.
There are people out there who will kill us for basically no
reason at all except out of prejudice, the fact that
they have no regard for human life, and that they are just
down right crazy.
If the rest of the world want to try and live a life without
protection, more power to y'all but I assure everyone that
the American people, we want a right to defend ourselves.
At least the majority do.
