What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 23-12-2009 JonG Wrote:Also #9 on Time magazine's best of 2009 list. Not that we're keeping score or anything, but I believe I posted that before the recommendation from Ed. :biggrin1: Apologies for the ommission, Jon. I don't pay much attention to these lists at this time of the year, so I'd missed your post. What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 24-12-2009 from my library ![]() One of those rare finds for me. I know they've been around for awhile (2001), but they are new to me. This is the 4th full length album from this Oregon band. They have one since then which tiggi has highly recomended. Based on this one, I'll have to check it out. The title track of this album is based on a Japanese folk tale about a man who marries a woman who is actually a (what else, a crane). The bird, not the lifting thing. I'll spare you and my fingers the details. I have no idea why the sequencing has #3 at the beginning and #1 & 2 later. The story would dictate those be in order. Makes no sense. The 12+ minute The Island is based on Shakespeares The Tempest and is broken into 3 parts of which only the last 2 are included in the clip. Other songs are based on real life historical events, which makes it all the more interesting for me. Pretty morbid subject matter throughout which makes for good music. The album reached #35 in the U.S. I LOVE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Summersong Best Track - The Perfect Crime #2 Sing, muse, of the passion of the pistol Sing, muse, of the warning by the whistle On a night so dark in the waning A dawn obscured by slate sky raining Five and twenty burglars by the reservoir A teenage lookout on the signal tower The mogul's daughter in hogtie The mogul fingers the wrong guy, all lies It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime The bagman's quaking at the fingers The hand-off glance a little lingers A well-dressed man in the crosshairs A shot rings out from somewhere upstairs It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime It was the perfect crime It was like a ticker-tape parade When the plastique on the safe was blown away And we all gazed from eye to eye As we mouthed our silent goodbyes The valley's sleeping like a bastard It stinks of slumber and disaster Two words are spoken on the tap wire The agent's ploy finds a surefire backfire It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime 1) The Crane Wife 3 - *** - audio YouTube - The crane wife 3 The Decemberists 2) The Island - *** - audio YouTube - The Decemberists - The Island, Come And See, The Landlord's Daugter part 2 3) Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) - *** - audio YouTube - The Decemberists - Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) (with lyrics) 4) O Valencia! - ** - live YouTube - The Decemberists - O Valencia 5) The Perfect Crime #2 - *** - live YouTube - Perfect Crime #2 - The Decemberists on Leno 6) When The War Came - ** - audio YouTube - When The War Came 7) Shankill Butchers - *** - audio YouTube - The Shankill Butchers - The Decemberists (Lyrics) 8) Summersong - * - audio YouTube - The Decemberists - Summersong (with lyrics) 9) The Crane Wife 1 & 2 - ** - audio YouTube - The Decemberists - Crane Wife 1 and 2 10) Sons & Daughters - *** - audio YouTube - The Decemberists Sons and Daughters 11) Culling Of The Fold - *** - audio YouTube - The Decemberists: The Culling Of The Fold 12) After The Bombs - ** - live YouTube - The Decemberists- after the bombs 3's - 7 2's - 4 1's - 1 Rating - 2.5 What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 24-12-2009 Pixies - Bossanova ![]() One of my favourite bands. Their music is basically '60s stuff given some severe twists, and a muscular & unique sound. Roaring guitars, enigmatic lyrics, & surfer harmonies combine to winning effect. This is a blast from start to finish... What Are You Listening To? - trbc08 - 25-12-2009 Gang of Four's Entertainment! What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 27-12-2009 listened online ![]() After breaking from a major label with one of those pesky contract disputes, these Ohio boys offer their second album at rockproper.com, and it's a pretty good effort. You can listen to each song or download the entire album for free. Other indie bands are available there also. I LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Do The Sucker Best Track - The Goddess 1) Cocaine and Tunes - ** 2) So Long Sundays - *** - audio YouTube - The Sun - So Long Sundays 3) Special Day - *** 4) spitmeout - ** 5) Cold Hands (Clap Louder) - * 6) Watch Out - ** 7) Do The Sucker - * 8) Alien - ** 9) The Goddess - *** 10) In Perfect Time - ** 3's - 3 2's - 5 1's - 2 Rating - 2.1 What Are You Listening To? - dgas1992 - 28-12-2009 Patrick Wolf- Wolf Song What Are You Listening To? - CMB1888 - 28-12-2009 Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights - and by rights Patrick Wolf really should be Kate Bush's son dgas1992 Wrote:Patrick Wolf- Wolf Song What Are You Listening To? - dgas1992 - 29-12-2009 I definitely agree! What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 30-12-2009 The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army ![]() A band who have much in common with Flaming Lips IMHO: - A penchant for over-crowded stages - A strong similarity musically - A love of kitchen-sink record production This is a swaggering Alt-Rock album, and mine has a complementary DVD of the making of this complex album, which we watched...
