One-Man-Songwriting-Machine Connor Oberst, plus friends produce a first-class album of Alt-Americana.

'07 release that didn't make much impression on first listen (must have been tired !!). How wrong first impressions can be...

These are songs of universally high quality, and are all engaging.

Much better than I realised...

I know that it was pretty much a miserable failure and has absolutely no songs as well known as some off of Star, but I actually always preferred King as an album. It was one of my favorites throughout a good chunk of the 90s, and I still enjoy it quite a bit on the rare occasion that it gets a spin these days. Also, I actually really LIKED "Super-connected!!"

My interest was piqued following Ed's glowing summary, and a Rick Rubin production clinched it.

This is a very good Alt-Americana album, with a beautifully poised RR production.

Big Up for Ed for finding it...

Also #9 on Time magazine's best of 2009 list. Not that we're keeping score or anything, but I believe I posted that before the recommendation from Ed. :biggrin1:

But I'm not familiar with it either way...

Exiled Sandwich by Vomit Launch - Released in the 80's, I've got two versions on vinyl (the US release and a German release) and they posted the downloadable version on Amazon.com a while ago and I finally got it. The intro track, "Bad Acid" is my favorite, but I like it all. They're what I'd call folk punk.

Cult Of Ray and Teenager Of The Year by Frank Black - A couple of my favorite post Pixies albums from Black Francis. Great alternative guitar pop/rock. Favorite Track "(I Wanna Live On An) Abstract Plain"

Trio B.C. and portions of Both Before I'm Gone by Girl In A Coma - They've been described by some as a Latina version of The Smiths and I'd agree. Nina the lead singer has a unique voice and amazing stage presence live. See them if you can. Favorite Tracks: "Their Cell", "Vino", "Pink Lemonade"

Because I'm Awesome and portions of Eat My Heart Out by The Dollyrots - Fun, noisey pop/punk/rock with female vocals with an attitude. Favorite Tracks: "Because I'm Awesome", "Brand New Key", "Nobody Wants U"

Talking Heads - Naked

Their last album, and whilst it's certainly not their best, I still find it stunning.

A world tour of rhythms back the usual/unusual Byrne lyrics, and listening to this for the first time in a few years, I was knocked out by the attention to detail in the music...

...and they split up before becoming crap.

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News

First of two of theirs that I've bought after seeing them discussed on MD.

Solid Alt Rock. My initial thoughts were that this had a Mercury Rev feel to it (in retrospect, maybe not), and the next moment I read from the CD booklet that one track features the input of one Dave Fridmann - who used to play bass with MR, and now produces, particularly with Flaming Lips - along with Flaming Lips themselves.

It's a small world...

... but I wouldn't want to have to paint it !!
