Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 06-06-2013

"**" for me also, still have a 2cd set of his hits in the pile awaiting a spin, not a great artist IMO, just okay, but very influential nonetheless....

#333 - Young Rascals - Good Lovin' - 1966

running recap for me - 3's=95, 2's=61, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Rudy Clark, Arthur Resnick
Produced by Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin
Chart action: #1 US

the players:
Eddie Brigati – vocals, percussion
Felix Cavaliere - vocals, keyboards
Gene Cornish - guitar
Dino Danelli - drums

When the group cut this cover of an obscure song by the Olympics, they didn't like it. A shock
to them when it topped the chart. It was the groups first hit, from their debut album and more
hits would follow. Featured in many films and tv shows since then, it could be considered the
groups signature song. The group dropped the Young from their name possibly thinking they
may be around for awhile.

"**" from me this time round MH, a very good band IMO

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 09-06-2013

I have the vinyl copy of Sex Machine !!!!tremendous live album ...this song gets five stars from me !!!!!! The Godfather at his optimum best !!!!!
Music Head Wrote:#334 - James Brown - Get Up (I Feel Like Being) A Sex Machine - 1970

running recap for me - 3's=94, 2's=61, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by James Brown, Bobby Byrd, Ron Lenhoff
Produced by James Brown
Chart action: #15 US, #32 UK

the players:
James Brown – lead vocal, piano
Bobby Byrd - backing vocal, organ
Bootsy Collins - bass
Catfish Collins - guitar
Jabo Starks - drums
Clayton Gunnells - trumpet
Darryl Jamison - trumpet
Robert McCollough - tenor saxophone

Ridiculous lyrics make this miss the love mark but nobody could do funk better than the
Godfather. James debuted his new band for this crossover hit (#2 r&b). Didn't know Bootsy was a
part of that. Always learning. Can't stop till I get enough. Not sure if this was on a studio
album. Clip is a good one from the Letterman show.

Lyrics

[Part 1:]
Get up
get up
get up

get on up
stay on the scene

get on up
like a Sex Machine.
Get on up
get up
Shake your arm
then use your form.
Stay on the scene like a Sex Machine.
You gotta have the feeling
sure as you're born.
Get it together
right on
right on

get up
get up
get up.

I said the feeling you got to get

give me the fever in a cold sweat.

The way I like it is the way it is.
I got mine and don't worry about his.

[Part 2:]
Get up
get up...

You got to have the feeling get on up

sure as born get on up.
Get it together right on
right on

right on
right on
right on
right on

right on
right on
right on
right on

right on
right on.

Get up
get on up
get up
get on up

and then shake your money maker.
Shake your money maker
shake your money maker

shake your money maker
shake your money maker

shake your money maker
shake your money maker.

#332 - Supremes - Baby Love - 1964

running recap for me - 3's=96, 2's=61, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Where Did Our Love Go
Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland
Produced by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier
Chart action: #1 US, #1 UK

the players:
Diana Ross – lead vocal
Florence Ballard - backing vocals
Mary Wilson - backing vocals
Funk Brothers - instruments

Love any of the singles these gals did. Motown was churning out the hits in this period. Berry
Gordy was looking for a follow up to the groups first #1 single, Where Did Our Love Go. They
sound very similar but that was the unmistakable sound of the Supremes. The group holds the
record for the most #1 singles, at 12. Hard to believe that record still stands.

Lyrics

Ooh baby love, my baby love
I need you, oh how I need you
But all you do is treat me bad
Break my heart and leave me sad
Tell me, what did I do wrong
To make you stay away so long

'Cause baby love, my baby love
Been missing ya, miss kissing ya
Instead of breaking up
Let's do some kissing and making up
Don't throw our love away
In my arms, why don't you stay?

Need ya, need ya
Baby love, ooh, baby love

Baby love, my baby love
Why must we seperate, my love
All of my whole life through
I never loved no one but you
Why you do me like you do?
I get this need

Ooh, ooh, need to hold you
Once again, my love
Feel your warm embrace, my love
Don't throw our love away
Please don't do me this way
Not happy like I used to be
Loneliness has got the best of me

My love, my baby love
I need you, oh how I need you
Why you do me like you do
After I've been true to you
So deep in love with you

Baby, baby, ooh till it's hurtin' me
Till it's hurtin' me
Ooh, baby love
Don't throw our love away
Don't throw our love away

#331 - Patti Smith Group - Dancing Barefoot - 1979

running recap for me - 3's=97, 2's=61, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Waves
Written by Patti Smith, Ivan Kral
Produced by Todd Rundgren
Chart action: did not chart

the players:
Patti Smith – vocal
Jay Dee Daugherty – drums
Lenny Kaye – guitar
Ivan Kral – bass
Richard Sohl – piano

Didn't know this was a single. Probably never got airplay where I was. The album (her 4th) was
considered a move towards a more mainstream pop sound. Not sure how this track would fall into
that. The band would split after the album, and Patti took some time off (8 years) to raise
some children after marrying guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith (MC5). I don't think anything she did
after that time off equalled any of those first four albums.

Lyrics

she is benediction
she is addicted to thee
she is the root connection
she is connecting with he

here I go and I don't know why
I fell so ceaselessly
could it be he's taking over me...

I'm dancing barefoot
heading for a spin
some strange music draws me in
makes me come on like some heroin/e

she is sublimation
she is the essence of thee
she is concentrating on
he, who is chosen by she

here I go and I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly,
could it be he's taking over me...

[chorus]

she is re-creation
she, intoxicated by thee
she has the slow sensation that
he is levitating with she ...

here I go and I don't know why,
I spin so ceaselessly,
'til I lose my sense of gravity...

[chorus]

(oh god I fell for you ...)

the plot of our life sweats in the dark like a face
the mystery of childbirth, of childhood itself
grave visitations
what is it that calls to us?
why must we pray screaming?
why must not death be redefined?
we shut our eyes we stretch out our arms
and whirl on a pane of glass
an afixiation a fix on anything the line of life the limb of a tree
the hands of he and the promise that s/he is blessed among women.

(oh god I fell for you ...)
