What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 18-02-2013

^^
aways hated that damn Meat Man

Jerry Lee taught the rappers to do shout outs to themselves in their songs
his ego was always too much
him and Little Richard both

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 18-02-2013

yeh, he certainly had 'self belief' in who he thought he was ie:the greatest r+r artist ever...

just thought Little Richard was overly flambouyant(probably the whole gay thing with him, like most gay artists are)

either way, they both helped create and shape early Rock n Roll,so cant knock 'em for that i guess

JERRY LEE LEWIS "southern roots/boogie woogie country man" cd.

the secodn disc in theis double play Jerry Lee set...
this one is "boogie woogie country man" originally released in 1975...
had it not been for the four brilliant bonus tracks this one might have scored pretty low here...
for the most part i think Jerry Lee sounds quite uninspired in his delivery of his vocals here, some very average tracks also, some of which were borderline like/dislikes, but because i didnt totally dislike them them got hte benefit of the doubt...
maybe his apparent dis-interest here stems from his recent divorce(his fourth in five years), his alcohol/drug abuse at the time or even his jailing for DUI prior to this one being recorded...not sure, but as i said apart from the bonus tracks at the end, this one wouldnt cut it for me.
couldnt decide on a favourite one here, so i picked two of the bonus tracks, love the irony in "a damn fine country song" in which he describes that all the troubles in his life would make a damn fine country song...well, he sure got that right!

On to them E cd's and I still come up with another country selection. Steve Earle's fifth album
was an acoustic set. Another of those back to the roots kind of things. Steve calls it his
unplugged album, but makes clear it has nothing to do with MTV, by stating he hates the music
channel. Tell 'em Steve. Being acoustic doesn't make it a solo gig. Steve has some help from
country players Peter Rowan, Roy Huskey, Norman Blake and Emmylou adds beautiful backup on two
tracks. His career was in a tailspin after cutting ties with label MCA. Had done some jail time
in Texas for drug and weapons charges and got treatment while serving that time. A clean Steve
signed with an indie label to begin his comeback. Well accepted by critics but the album did
not make any charts, probably due to the new label. A few covers including the Beatles I'm
Looking Through You which I'm surprised I liked. Another, a Townes Van Zandt tune who Steve
says in the notes that his son Justin Townes Earle was named after. Three tracks I love here
and one short instrumental by Norman Blake that I have to pass on. Sadly the Emmylou tracks
didn't make my love score. But I do love her. Funny that the album was nominated for a grammy
in the Folk category, losing to Emmylou's Wrecking Ball.

Back to the new stack. It was a George Strait album last week also. We jump from his second to
his fourteenth this week, 12 years later. Not much of a change except his career took off. This
is a slightly better album than that second one. There was none to love on the last and this
one gives me one, an old tune called I Met A Friend Of Yours Today, which is an old song
probably first done by someone else. George makes it his though. One bomb with What Am I
Waiting For, making it an average like album. It gave him his ninth #1 country album and four
top 10 singles. The leadoff track became George's 31st #1 single, and he was far from done. My
favorite wasn't even a single, boo-hoo.
