What Are You Reading ? - Music Head - 20-08-2012 Mary Beth Norton - Founding Mothers and Fathers - 1997 ![]() Misleading title as this has nothing to do with the founding fathers as we think of that term (Washington, Adams, Jefferson). The focus here is the mid 1600's. The colonies were being formed and rules had to be made. An in depth analysis of how laws were enforced in that period. Interesting to find all of the laws that were created based on biblical text. Scary too. Life in two different areas of the country (Massacusetts and Maryland) are compared, and while punishments varied, the laws were very similar. Public lashings for a lot of things. Just be thankful. Took me awhile to get into it, but I did. Seemed like a textbook at times. Probably only appreciated by scholars, and me. Grade - B next up - At Canaans Edge by Taylor Branch What Are You Reading ? - hatchetman - 29-08-2012 Just reread the Hunger Games books. Was bored last week and watched the movie and then got the urge to read them again. What Are You Reading ? - TraceNspace - 29-08-2012 hatchetman Wrote:Just reread the Hunger Games books. I know they have to cut some things but without introducing the mayor's daughter. It will change the next movies too. But overall, it was a small change and won't affect too much. They just won't include Madge in any of the future movies. What Are You Reading ? - Music Head - 09-09-2012 ![]() Whew! that took awhile. Well worth the almost 800 pages. Mostly a bio of MLK during the years 65-68, ending with his death. He was at his peak influence on the civil rights movement. But the followers had become restless with the whole peaceful protest marches thing. Radical influences had set in with the Black Panthers. Also a lot of politics in here, as that is a lot of what Martin was, a politician. A lot of meetings with the Johnson administration over what was needed to quell the disturbances in major cities. Johnson had the Vietnam war on his plate too. Much of the book deals with that also. I think the war agenda sort of got in the way of the peace agenda. War, protests, what better way to remember the 60's. Only thing missing was the music. Grade - A next up - If I Ever Get Back To Georgia, I'm Gonna Nail My Feet To The Ground by Lewis Grizzard What Are You Reading ? - TraceNspace - 11-09-2012 Music Head Wrote: That sounds very interesting. When I'm looking for something to read all I need to do is sort through your posts and find the highest rated ones huh? What Are You Reading ? - TraceNspace - 11-09-2012 I am reading A Clash of Kings the second in the series A Song of Fire and Ice. I'm really enjoying it. I must be. I'm burning through them even though they are 1,000 pages long and I haven't had much "me time" since they cut the husbands overtime lol What Are You Reading ? - Music Head - 29-09-2012 ![]() The book was about as bad as the title. Fame as a newspaper sports reporter and as a humorist I guess. Andy Rooney type. Has a lot of books out there, but this is the first I had heard of him. Spends a lot of time poking fun at the newspaper industry. Sort of a bio from when he was a boy selling newspapers up to his employment at the time of the book. Grew up in Georgia and spent most of his career there, until taking a job in Chicago, hence the title, as he was trying to get back to Georgia which he regretted leaving. You can never go home Lewis. Written in 1990 and the dude died in '94. Don't know if he ever got back. Grade - D next up - Battle Cry Of Freedom by James M. McPherson What Are You Reading ? - TraceNspace - 29-09-2012 On to A Feast For Crows by George R.R. Martin. I'm a little concerned that when I get to book 5 I won't want to pay the $35 for the hardcover but I won't want to wait either. Perhaps the library has it? I can hope... |
