Lindsey Buckingham turns 66 today. He was born in Palo Alto, California. Singer/songwriter, highly regarded guitarist (slipped into one hundredth position in the 2011 Rolling Stone Magazine's "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" rankings) and male vocalist for Fleetwood Mac. He and Stevie Nicks joined Mick Fleetwood in 1974 and by their second album, Rumours, Buckingham had proceeded to write “Go Your Own Way”, the single that shot the group to stardom, as well as a whole bunch of other noteworthy numbers. He was also responsible for some unusual behaviour by marching bands as a result of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1296pOG7J0.

He's done quite a lot of solo work and I'm not familiar with any of it - yet. I like this group-written effort from Rumours, “The Chain” –

Chris Lowe was born on this day in Lancashire, England, in 1955. One half of the synth-pop duo The Pet Shop Boys – The Guardian, remarking on his preference for standing still behind his keyboards during performances, stated that he was "possibly more famous for not doing anything than almost anyone else in the history of popular entertainment."

Their first really big hit –

Colin Meloy was born on this day in 1974, in Helena, Montana. He is the lead vocalist, principal songwriter and guitarist for Portland, Oregon based indie folk/rock band,The Decemberists. He also plays the bazouki, piano and harmonica. He seems to me a modern day bard; a teller of historical tales and a keeper of folklore, (albeit with a fair dose of poetic licence) which is no doubt why their songs are quite different, lyrically strong – well considered. They appear to be gaining ground musically too – it’ll be interesting to see how Mr Meloy evolves in the future.

Music aside, he and his wife, Carson Ellis, with whom he shares his birthday, have written and illustrated (respectively) a trilogy of children’s books.

From The King is Dead, with Peter Buck on guitar on this particular track which was nominated for a Best Rock Song Grammy but which lost out to The Foo Fighters’ “Walk”. The R.E.M. influences are quite evident – “Down By The Water” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR9DjdMrpHg

And another one I like from that album – “Rox in the Box” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Waz7PMZHeg

And from this year’s What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World – “Carolina Low”

Gavin Sutherland was born on this day in 1951. He and his brother Iain were The Sutherland Brothers with Gavin as chief songwriter, bassist and lead vocalist.

They joined forces with Quiver in the early seventies and achieved some chart successes, with “The Arms of Mary” and “Secrets” and some non-successes with the likes of this, with none other than David Gilmour on the pedal steel guitar ... "Ain't Too Proud" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL9qB0xaI6w

I didn’t know that Gavin had been responsible for writing and first recording “Sailing” – here’s their original version ...
